I too got the email from Fictionwise and immediately went to preorder (esp since it had a 100% micropay rebate) and it would not show up in my cart. Then I refreshed the page and saw the notice that it was no longer for sale. I am bummed. I don't want a bootleg version, I no longer buy paperbooks (haven't for almost 10 years), I want to pay for the ebook. One good thing is that I can always rely on Mobileread to have the inside scoop. I was wondering what the problem was.
Still, I am hopeful. I believe that the book will be available as an ebook within a week of its debut.

It is also available at Fictionwise's Parent Company Barnes and Noble for preorder for 9.99. So, maybe this is why Fictionwise took it down. Maybe BN wanted to have first crack.

This article from The Guardian asserts that the ebook is part of the core marketing strategy and has some interesting things to say about changing attitudes...

Could Dan Brown's new novel spell the end for the printed word?

Nice article. Let me quote the parts I've found more interesting:

Quote:
Last week, as the title arrived at number four on Amazon's bestseller chart, Brown's American publishers, Knopf DoubleDay, announced that an ebook of the title, to be downloaded and read on screen, will be released simultaneously. With more than 81m copies of The Da Vinci Code sold across the world, industry hopes for the transformative power of this new title may be justified.

(...)

Rickett said he published an ebook simultaneously with all his titles and that this was linked to new online marketing strategies.

(...)

The technology that allows readers to read books on a handheld screen is improving just at the moment Brown's The Lost Symbol hits the streets. For Rickett, the possibilities, including books with scored soundtracks and video inserts, are just becoming clear.

"The ebook is very quickly becoming a publishing reality and The Lost Symbol will be one of the fastest-selling books of recent times," he said. "Once people can flip between books, look up references online and switch to an audio reading, everything will change very quickly."

(...)

Some American authors, particular in the crime and the business genres, already sell a third of their copies as ebooks. But, although the new Brown title will be a huge publicity boost for the ebook, the industry knows that by far the biggest readership will be on paper.

Will this translate into wider sales for other printed books? "Pretty soon, rival book stores will start discounting editions to draw people in. It can't help but rub off to some degree," said Rickett.

No, it's again available for pre-order. And before it was a 100% rebate, now it's $9.95.

Bad news from Lübbe:

"[..]"Das Verlorene Symbol" wird vorerst nicht als eBook erscheinen, genauso wie die übrigen Titel von Dan Brown[..]"

..."lost symbol" will not be released as ebook for now, just as the other books of Dan Brown....

What a sad and fatal decision for the german ebook-market.

Won't even bother to ask the Dutch publisher (if I knew who it was).
