I didn't buy the offical cover, but I did buy a VERY expensive leather cover (from Amazon) put out by Haan.

This is a beautiful cover, and has two attaching prods that attach to the Kindle 2.

I never open my Kindle from the back or read with some fingers between the back case and the back cover as I hold it; nevertheless, I'm wondering if the mechanism on the Haan is the same as the one on Amazon's official cover and whether or not I should be concerned.

I have had that cover since day one and I have not had issues with it. I think the problems come from people trying to open the cover in the wrong direction and that is what causes the cracks.
