I've been told that both the 505 and the 700 are being discontinued and replaced with new models.

I hope they keep the stellar, non-touch screen of the 505 series. The 700 is way too fuzzy for me.

Unless their technicians can come up with a 'best of both worlds'. That would be awesome.

It's official. I am blind.

I can't even spot "fuzzy" when it is so clearly obvious. Why must I be cursed with this non-fuzzy seeing vision?

Actually as much as I love my PRS 700, I am just hoping Sony has a larger screen coming up for us. I think that the PRS 505 is an incredible basic reader (and much better than my Kindle).

But if it has a touch screen, I would love it even more. Seeing as I can't detect the "fuzziness" of the 700 at all.

Damn my eyes.

I'm glad the 700 doesn't look fuzzy to you.

I did say "IMO" in my original post. My eyesight is impaired and not correctable. I can't read on the 700 even at the largest font.

The 505 is much better for me.

I doubt they would replace them with a bigger screen. They'd be stupid to let drop the 6" line completely...

So, the 505 will be replaced with the 510 (6") and the 700 will be discarded as a failed experiment and replaced with a new device (the 900) with a 9" screen?

As far as the Reader is concerned, the LRF/LRX support is still better than EPUB, and there is plenty of PRS-500's out there with no EPUB support whatsoever.
I prefer LRX format, too, but Sony has nearly ceased making new titles available at their store: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16810
If this is not temporary, then it implies they are headed to a different mode for letting customers buy content unless they are simply exiting the business altogether.

Pure speculation on my part, but if Sony can learn anything from Amazon, it's that the people want to be able to purchase the books straight from their Readers. So, in my opinion Sony will come out with a whole new Reader lineup this fall. Probably "connected" Readers (via some wireless interface), probably a couple of different screen sizes. I hope they don't use the same unfortunate front-light-touchscreen combination that was the PRS-700's downfall.

hasn't there been some confirmation that they plan to add wireless connectivity to their next gen devices ? or were those just rumours ? i can't remember precisely but i know it's been evoked previously.

I haven't had a single problem getting new releases. They have most of the newest stuff. I think the drop in added titles is due to a drop in adding backlist titles.

What about those of us who have no desire to have wireless? Are we going to be forced to buy features we have no need/desire for? Dammit. I love the 505. I just pray my 505 lasts for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time...

Well they have to leave us a way to download ebooks to our Sony regardless of what their plans are.

They *have to*? They absolutely should, and it would be disgusting if they didn't, but I'm pretty sure they always have the disclaimer when you install the software that they have the right to discontinue the Service whenever they want to. Even iTunes has that disclaimer.

Most bookstores, if you read the "small print", do not guarantee to make your books available "for life". Eg, FictionWise only guarantee that you'll be able to download them for three months.
