I disagree. Rowling didn't fool anyone, yet her books are among the most popular ever written. It's not about fooling readers, it's about writing an interesting and entertaining story. In this regard, I think Simmons succeeds with "Hyperion". You are free to disagree, of course, but there's no point in "scientifically" trying to justify what is essentially just an opinion.

I made (at least in my mind...) a distinction between noticing while reading and noticing while reflecting a bit about the book. Also among people that read a lot of books I have heard a lot of criticism of Rowling's books and some of it are that she have done old stuff much worse than the original.

DixieGal, have you read any Linnea Sinclair? I haven't read any of the authors mentioned here, but I enjoy her space operas. I guess I have to say that her books are labeled as "Science Fiction Romance". They are not firstly romance novels, though - and I usually have to go to the SFF section of the books store to find them. They do tend to include a romantic couple in them to differing degrees, depending on the story.

Would Neverness stand alone? I'm such a slow reader that trilogies end up being forever. Or at least a couple of months.
Yes, Neverness definitely will stand alone, though note that it's a big book itself. I second the recommendation though.

Cheers,

Sorry, I don't read minds. I'm on it, though! Next time you post, I'll know exactly what you mean!

Indeed. I am amongst those people, who are critical of Rowling's work. I am happy that you get the point.

If you liked Fire Upon the Deep, an obvious choice would be Deepness in the Sky by the same author (Vernor Vinge). It is even set in the same universe, but the books have nothing in common otherwise as they are set thousands of years apart.
