Hmm - That's a bit strong isn't it? I posted the original because I wanted to respond to a comment elsewhere in a more appropriate place & frankly, if mtravellerh hadn't jumped in about closing it, I expect it would have just gone quiet of it's own accord.

Now however, I'd like to know exactly what criteria is used to explictly terminate discussions on a thread that was specifically posted in a discussion forum where it wouldn't be off-topic?

I wouldn't read to far into mth's thought of closing the thread. I think he simply felt that since the party the thread was intended for left, anything more became superfluous by nature. And as it (And remember I'm on the DRM != Piracy / Anti-DRM side so don't stone me) really wasn't a discussion between anyone else, just a bunch of people barking their opinions towards that one individual (No judgments here as to whether anyone was right/wrong) there wasn't much point in continuing it. I really doubt mth was trying to censor discussion, I don't even doubt mth was against having this as an open discussion/debate elsewhere.

I think mth just wanted to leave the bad blood (again, not placing blame) here and move on, whether that means starting a new thread to debate the image of Anti-DRM = Pro-Piracy or just move onto another topic altogether.

Just because p3aul left doesn't mean the premise of the thread is not valid. It only means that p3aul is intolerant of anyone's opinion but his own. And he's not the thread starter anyway, gwynevans is.

I, for one, enjoy hearing other peoples' opinions on the relative merits of encryption to prevent copyright violations.

I have stated mine, but in case you missed it I think it's a violation of my rights as a consumer and it prevents fair use of a product that I own by virtue of having paid for it. And I won't even begin to opine about software licensing!

I only seconded the closure of the thread because p3aul seemed to have left and the discussion became a dialogue between posters and a missing member.
By all means allow it to continue, but as most (if not all) of us agree on DRM = Don't Remove Manacles.....I don't know how much more can be said on this subject that hasn't been aired, hovered and billowed elsewhere.

You know every time you folks talk about closing this thread or make explanations about why you thought it should be closed, you pop it up to the top again. It would have died a quiet death by now. My suggestion in future is to either just close a thread and deal with the consequences or leave it alone (no hinting around about closing it).

OT: Noted. I like your suggestion, which I'm going to put into practice, although I've personally never closed a thread. (Enough posts by me; back on topic. I have other areas to visit.)

Well yes it is censorship, but that is not really the concern, just asking for consistency.

If a thread is going to be closed it should be for violating a forum rule, not based on what a Mod's mood is for the day is, or their opinion of the worth of the thread.

Well, as that one DID hurt, I would like to answer:

I wanted to close the thread based on facts, not based on any mood swing or wanting to censor anything. Fact: The thread had been opened specifically to continue another thread and to "convince" a DRM-defender. That was quite a strange goal in itself. As this user was gone, I didn't see any use for that thread anymore.

This didn't have anything at all to do with any kind of censorship. I just perceived an unanimity on the DRM issue and plenty of other threads around to discuss this thread's issue. This horse has been beaten to death all too much already.

I could have just closed the thread down. Instead I specifically asked if someone minded. As this seems to be the case, I don't close it. So please get off of my back!

I don't understand this all too aggressive behaviour of yours, frankly!

Threads are not only closed for violating rules, btw, you should base your elugubrations on facts!

Strictly, the thread was created to respond to a comment that p3aul made in the "Feedback" forum and I felt that it was better to respond here, with a link post, than to respond there, where it was off-topic. As for "this user was gone", he might well have left the original thread, but was still on the forums (as I was helping with an issue of his in another thread) and did feel it worth trying to highlight other scenarios that he might not have considered. Maybe he'd read it, I didn't know, but FWIW, I still don't consider it 'strange'...
