What in Bob's name are you talking about? That is not normal. The page numbers are in the tiny status bar at the bottom of the screen.

Not in the epub files I've tried. They keep jumping to the middle of the screen right next to the text...I have no clue why it's doing that adn I've tested a few epub files. I know I tried more than one epub file (one I did create myself to be fair) and got too annoyed by the layout of the numbers I just couldn't read the story. I figured that's how it was supposed to look because everyone else said the epub file adds it's own number and I don't think i'm the only one that's run into this?

I just kind of wish it would act more like the LRF format in terms of keeping track of the pages.

What the hell - you pay for your e-books and get advirtisment anyway. Does they also spy on your user behaviour?

I found a link that explains somewhat of what's happening. In my epub files I normally use the smallest margin possible because I like using the full screen...so I think that's why the numbers on epub files I've tried have messed up the paragraphs and seemed to float all over the place...

I use zero margins but have never seen anything like you describe. My numbers stay down at the bottom of the screen, with the battery charge and font size.

In the epub forums it looks like I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I think maybe it's using Calibre to create the epub file??? I honestly thought that's how they meant for it to come out because in the forums someone pointed out that Sony wanted the number in the right margin...You're the first person I've heard from that actually doesn't have the number popping up in the middle of the screen in the right margin...

I see this all the time... if one page ends on the same screen as the other page beings then I see a page number in the right margin. I don't recall seeing a book that didn't have this so far (but I'm only on book #4). :-)

ADE has it's page number on the right hand side of the screen. if you have your text far enough to the right, it will sometimes clash with the text. But, I don't find this a problem as I'm able to understand what the word is supposed to be even with the clash.

It works the same way in the computer version of ADE as well as the version Sony is using.

I think it is a great idea, in fact I have contracted with a few companies to add some ads to the classics. Here is a preview.

"It was the best of times for a refreshing Coca Cola, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom courtesy of Harvard University, it was the age of foolishness brought to you by Comedy Central; it was the epoch of belief thanks to the blessed members of the First Baptist Church of New York, it was the epoch of incredulity; it was the season of Light brought to us by Minnesota Power and Light, it was the season of Darkness thanks to high quality window blinds currently 50% off at the Home Depot; it was the spring of hope with spring like freshness that only Tide detergent can bring, it was the winter of despair but not for long with Prozac; we had everything before us because we invested wisely with E.F Hutton, we had nothing before us; we were all going directly to Heaven (also courtesy of the First Baptist Church of New York), we were all going the other way thanks to turn by turn directions with our Tom Tom Go GPS navigator."

I do not think it takes away from the story at all.

I'm slightly OCD and I twitch when I see the number right next to the text...It needs to be far away from the text. Perferably where the page number is already located! Which is also very confusing having two numbers for the same book? They need to either add the page number for the epubs where the normal page numbers go, or just get rid of it. I don't know any e-ink device that doesn't have a built in numbering system (or in the case of the Kindle percentages)

The page number on the Reader stays down there, but ePub also has page numbers on the sides of the pages, in very tiny type; occasionally, these numbers overlap the text.

I don't know what you people are looking at, but ePub, LRF, and ADE all look the same on my 505.

Okay, let's try to clear this up - even if we're in the wrong thread. To start, DixieGal, are all the books of those formats fully justified (even edge of text on both the left and right margins)? And do you use Calibre?

At this page, very close to the bottom adobe offers their "EPUB Best Practices". The chapter dedicated to "Adobe extensions" explains peculiar Adobe's grievance with ePub format, the lack of "page map" resource. One could argue that "page map" is very strange concept for reflowable format that ePub is, but there you have it.

I did not experiment with "page map" extensions, although I would not be surprised if numbers disappear on such documents. It is my understanding that for ePub files without that resource, ADE calculates "synthetic page" and marks the beginning of that page with the number.

It looks horrible, of course. Why they decided not to render the document and find actual page breaks for the device in the background, when ebook is opened for the first time? No idea.
