Agreed, but geographic restrictions are not the same as copyright laws. The restrictions we are talking about derive from agreements between authors, publishers and distributors. They in no way affect the author's copyright or vice versa.

The geographic limitations are based on Amazon, or any comapnies, ability to sell a particular work by a particular author in a particular country. Amazon must abide by the legal contract that exists between the author and publisher. Part of that contract is going to deal with copyright law because it determines who has the legal right to sell the book and the terms of that sale. That legal contract is binding in that country. If Amazon was to say "screw it" and sell what they want, where they want, they would be breaking the law in a variety of countries and would not be allowed to sell anything in those areas.

You can buy one for your friend from Amazon in the US, and have them send it to Croatia in the usual way. Your friend will then be able to register it, and will not need gift certificates to purchase books.

That said, he might still be up against geographic restrictions on the books he wants to read. If so, he could perhaps register to your Canadian address, and use gift certs for the books.

If you just want to give him gift certificates as a gift, that should be fine too. Regardless of where his Kindle is registered, he should be able to use them to buy Kindle books or any other Amazon products from the Amazon US site (but, if you buy the certificates from Amazon in France, Germany or the UK, he will have to spend them in those countries).
Thanks for your help.

But the hack/jb goes fine, fw 2.5.4., I can browse the web, use wikipedia, use everything with 3G.
Thanks for the heads up.

If you want to share books, the solution is to register both Kindles to the same account. That way, any books either of you buys will be available to the other.

The only problem I can foresee is that if you are both reading the same book at the same time, and you both have wireless switched on, one or both of you will lose your place because of the auto-syncing. But that shouldn't be insurmountable.

Good luck with his. I hope your friend enjoys her Kindle.

You have a choice to sync or not. All you have to do is choose not to sync. The alternative is to get in the habit of bookmarking the last page you were on.

Mike and ProfCash thanks again - this is a great thread!! Now a few of my other facebook friends are pondering the purchase of a Kindle, however they are concerned about the availability of e books in Australia. Hope you don't mind if I post a link to this discussion.
PS The newspaper that I subscribe to is available on Kindle, so alas - letting my paper boy (well woman) go was difficult.

Jjesske,

Glad you found it useful. By all means give a link to your friends.

Same here. I stopped getting my newspaper delivered at the start of the year. But it's saved me so much cash that I could afford to buy an e-reader dedicated to reading the morning paper if I wanted to.
