I don't think that Amazon care about Europe... Mobi is not really present in Europe, ePub is more here.
Ironically Mobi is made by an European company and work well in the US, and ePub is made by a US company and work well in Europe... I hope so! Last edited by Godzil; 04-28-2009 at 05:19 PM. |

No, but I doubt that the Weltbild product page is complete about the Cybook functionalities

They are one of the biggest sellers in the pBook-market in europe and now they loose the young but even though growing eBook-market here just because ePub is on it's way to the defacto ebook standard here. I can't imagine that Amazon doesn't care about one of their biggest markets. More likely Amazon can't offer the kindle2 in europe because the world-wide E-INK production capacity doesn't allow much more kindles to be produced and because they need contracts with the european authors and publishers first to offer enough ebooks here. Most of our authors and especially our publishers are not the best friends of amazon yet.

![]() Nevertheless the E-INK production capacity is very low compared to those of other display technologies. It's known that amazon could have sold more Kindle1 in the US if they had got more displays. |

For all mobile pre-E-Ink devices prc was a de facto German standard if you didn't want to use pdf. It would be a major flaw in Amazon's market policy if the would fall for the dumbest mistake of them all - not caring about the different settings and rules for a different market. If Amazon won't care for the European market, some other company gladly will. Amazon doesn't have such a huge market share at least in Germany (it is strong for sure), so their Kindle - should it ever come to Europe - will be rather late, will have to face quite some vivid competition and simply won't be such a granted success (still don't know if I call those 250.000 US-sales a success or not ...) as in the US. Buying Stanza was a clever move. About the rest I'm not so sure. But then, I don't care. The Kindle doesn't attract me, neither does Amazon's proprietary policy or their treatment of customers lately. Last edited by K-Thom; 04-28-2009 at 06:14 PM. |

I think so too: It will solve Amazon's problem of not being able to produce/buy enough Kindles to sell, if they can sell apps for existing devices to read Kindle books. Stanza was already working on that, and Amazon has the resources to speed up the process, hence, the buy.
Of course, I'd still rather have an app that reads ePub on all devices (like my iPaq), but until I get it, I can always convert ePub to Mobi. |

For what it is worth there is nothing on Bookeen's home page about dropping Mobipocket or adding epub, nor of any new developments or new vendors.
Their advertising material for the Cybook still has mobipocket as the format used. Regards, Alex |
