Actually, that's not true. Not every repair costs 300 Euro. In this case though you probably needed a completely new MB, which is why they replaced the unit.

OK...

I've managed to take off the corner pieces with a minimal amount of damage, there's been a little warping of the underneath clips, but nothing devasting. I've unscrewed the back screw. I've unscrewed the 4 side screws holding the capacitive side button covers. I can prise the top and bottom apart.

However, the sides.... argh.... how the hell are the white plastic things attached and how do they come part? Am I missing something?

Any and all suggestions welcome at this stage!

Question White plastic things?

omro,

I'm sorry, but I don't know what white plastic things you are talking about--can you send pictures?

There are only the four corners, the case front and back, and the grey plastic frame that everything is attached to. If you can't send pics, refer to the pictures earlier in the thread, and describe what you mean.

I'll check back.

Kent Walters

P.S.
The covers for the cap sense buttons don't need to be removed, and are best left in place; I would put them back on.

Kent,
I suspect Omro means that once you have the 4 corners off, the screw in the back removed, the front and back are held together at the sides very firmly. The "white plastic things" are the casing I think and Omro just wants to know how to separate them as it is not immediately obvious where to insert a separating tool. As I haven't bothered to try to get any further than Omro has (no desperate need yet) I too was wondering, but just shut up shop at that point.

Red face Oh; (embarrassed)

White 'things' (plural) threw me...

Just pick a corner and start prying apart. When you get enough separation to insert another tool in (I used credit cards), spread again, working your way around like that. It is a scary process, and as I've said elsewhere, I recommend patatan's solution.

Kent Walters

P.S.

I don't recommend anyone going in just for a look; at least some damage will be done, and the screen might be cracked in the process. For a good look inside, see the pictures at the beginning of the thread.

Well I made the attempt and the screen did indeed crack. I've now lost the bottom left hand corner an inch up to and inch and a half across. I doubt they'll even bother to repair it now even if I pay them.

Oh well, I had kinda resigned myself to it's loss. I think that's pretty much the end of my time with the DR. I can't say I will entirely miss it. It was an overpriced unit that promised much and delivered very little in relation to what I expected/hoped. I could easily have bought a netbook with the money I spent on it.

I will probably buy another electronic ink device in the future. Probably even this format and size, though unlikely from this manufacturer.

Sorry...

omro,

Sorry about your loss. I believe irex charges 400 Euro for a new screen; I don't know if it's worth it...

In my opinion, the DR's case is poorly designed; it is inherently weak, and seems to derive some of it's strength from the screen itself. The fear of an experience like yours is why I recommend cutting the case to make a repair. I share your beliefs about iRex...

Again, I am sorry.

Sounds oddly familiar I'm sure they will repair it if you pay them, its not really worth it IMHO.

The DR is certainly overpriced, but it did do many things well (displaying PDFs, comics, note taking), and I do miss it. I would call it a good deal if only it cost a third of what it does.

Rather than repair mine, I decided to drop $250 on a used TC1100 10'' A4 tablet (with detachable keyboard and Wacom), there are plenty on eBay. It does everything my DR did and a whole lot more (color display, for instance), but its relatively heavy (3 lbs, I remove the battery and use AC power while reading to make it lighter) and isn't eInk. Its not really fair to compare the DR to a netbook if those last 2 factors are critical to you.

Worth is a subjective thing; I'm not sure what I would do. I think I would just wait to see what else comes available, but then I can't stand to read long on an LCD screen.

I'm going to cut open the bottom section, see if the USB can still be repaired. The damaged area is along the bottom left so I've lost all the shortcut buttons. In pageflow mode, I can actually view anything that gets cut off by the damaged area. So the DR is still strangely useable, if I can get power going back into the thing.

However, I'm pretty much over it. I'd get another e-Ink device. This screen size or possibly bigger, if I can get one with a smaller bezel around the display. I barely used the writing functions of the iRex, however that was because of their poor calibration, not because I didn't want to use them, so I'd have to see if I were to ever want another that I could use to write on.

Good luck, omro; I hope you can salvage some useful serviceability out of it.

Sorry to hear your DR is dead ... but I get the impression that , like me, you are at least partially happy that this has in effect liberated you in some sense from the DR/iRex nightmare :-) iRex won't be around for years from the looks of it, they have gone to the US now but I would be VERY suprised if they don't find themselves in some jaw breaking Class Action suit before the end of the decade.

My insurance company has taken a look at my DR1000 and views it as beyond the cost of reasonable repair. I am now waiting for them to declare whether they will replace like for like or simply send me a cheque for it's cost.

Well looks like my DR adventure has come to an end. The insurance company declared it irreparable and oddly, rather than organising a like for like swap have given me a £600 voucher for PC World. Annoyingly, they don't stock the DR so that's that.
