A releated question on contractors: When they finally give you a time when they'll show up to do their job, where does the "oops, I won't be able to make it" phone call wind up? Do they call Katmandu by mistake instead?

Actually, when you finally catch up with them I think they usually say something like . . . "yeh, we said between 8 and 5, but we didn't specify TODAY!"

BTW, for fairness, I've had some very good experiences with contractors once or twice. It seems like the young ones who are just beginning to build a business are the best.

For instance, the guy who cut our grass last week did the weedeating for no extra charge.

And the man who was mudding some new sheetrock actually broke into the house to finish the job, because we were not there when he said he would be there. Yep, just jimmied the lock on a sunroom window and crawled right in. Breaking and entering shows dedication to a job!

Yep, it's those young contractors that I like to watch, er - I mean, hire, too! Ooops, did I type that out loud!

The last contractor I dealt with said he could not call me because he left his cell phone on the rear bumper of his truck and took off, so he has no idea wher his phone is now. That is why he did not get to me for over a week even though he lived 2 blocks away. I guess he lost his home phone as well.

This relates to another thread running about the English language:
It's funny how we use terms all the time that we know what they mean but someone from a different country or even state has no idea what we are talking about. DixieGal reminded me about how we in the Midwest call carbonated soft drinks, "pop"! If they were offered a pop, someone from the South who had never heard that before would have no idea what they were getting!!

Weedeater - a power tool used to trim grass along a fence, sidewalk, etc.

I was reading a book where the main character (a citizen of London) presented someone with a "CV". From the context I took it to be his resume. Was I correct?

Yes, Curriculum Vitae, CV is commonly used, although I've seen Resume popping up here and there

you gotta love language (and dialects !).

yes, "cv" means "curriculum vitae" and it's called a resume in us english. we use "cv" in french as well.

You use CV in France? I would have imagined Resume (can't do the accent) would have been more popular? Well, I learn something new every day
