However, the rendering engine will still be there as many features in windows use it... the desktop and the Explorer window. You are basically only removing the chrome and the start up icons and such. Once again, I am pretty sure this is a concession to the EU's commission's incompetent policies to protect companies rather than the consumer. See the Windows "N" version. I think Opera is one of the big complainers of IE being shipped with Windows. Although Safari is shipped with Mac and Firefox with Ubuntu but no one complains about that. BOb |

EDIT: Made redundant by BOb's post.

Thank you, Bob. Your post confirms my thinking - that although one might remove the IE "application", the actual HTML display control which forms the "core" of IE is so closely integrated with Windows, that it cannot be removed.
(I'm hoping that's the case, anyway, because my own software makes use of that control to render HTML pages, display picture, and much else.) |

Just a quick note: IE 8 is not compatible with the BlackBoard software used by the online university I attend. I had to retake a quiz due to a glitch where a message box "hid" the submit button. If you are taking online classes, check with your technical support before installing it.

I installed IE8 yesterday on my PC at work. The system was pretty fresh (s/w wise), less then a month old. IE8 takes about x3 longer to start than latest FF or IE7. It caused a problem to BD. For some inexplicable reason, it would take about 30 seconds to load BD instead of a snap of fingers.
Instead of uninstalling it, I have decided to use System Restore utility that comes with windows XP. After that, IE7 would open up for 1 second and close down of its own. I re-installed IE8, though it might cure the problem...No way. I had to use restore from Ghost image. Spec's of my PC at work are: Dell Optiplex 280GX, Win XP SP3. You have been warned. |

What I mean is what Bob and you are saying: that one can "remove" the application. Don |

Figured out what was the problem with IE8, BD, etc.
IE8 and Spybot - Search&Destroy issue Solution: de-immunize all. Remove ticks next to all IE entries, then re-immunize again. It will ignore IE. If you are using SpywareBlaster too, then after re-immunisztion in Spybot go to SpywareBlaster and enable all protection again. Why did it affect BD? Simple (I think). It either depends on IE or the last book I edited in BD was in HTML format. Thus starting up BD was causing the same problem as starting up IE8. Removing immunization in Spybot makes IE8 a vulnerability, but then when IE was not one? |

I moved to FF 11 months ago. I believe FF with a few add ons is a much better and comfortanle browser than IE (Ad Block Plus! worth the move, no doubt). However, I like to have a working version of IE on my computer. For example, my wife's college website supports IE only[I know, bad codding but you have to be realistic (c) Ninefingers]...to purchase MS LIT, to update Windows XP.
