I vote for Sugargliders. In the Age that was prior to the Age that followed, sugargliders signed a treaty with the squirrels but unbeknownst to them the squirrels had made a secret pact with the bats to take away the sugargliders natural advantage over the squirrels. Sugargliders, once a peaceful, proud and prosperous population were decimated in the bloody wars which were to follow. Only now, in part thanks to their cuteness, have their numbers begun to recover...

When I was a kid, we had a pet crow that we raised from an egg. His name was Gomer. He flew south every winter and returned for about five years in a row. Every spring my mom would be out in the yard yelling "Gomer","Gomer" into the trees. I'm glad we lived at a dead end street.
WDE. (That crow was smart, my mom knows smart.) |

We had a female skunk named Petunia when I was a kid. She made a great pet once she learned to sleep at night like the rest of the family.
![]() Back to the purpose of this thread . . . I haven't decided yet what critter to vote for. The list seems to keep growing every time I check back. I might wait a while to see if the options continue to grow in number, or . . . my vote can be bought for the right price. ![]() Maybe we should just have a(n) "Animal Obsession Of The Week" thread. ![]() Last edited by Lady Blue; 04-09-2009 at 09:54 PM. |

Crows are the smartest birds I have met. They are organized and know how to use some basic tools. Now to devise a crow Turing test....
The real question should be what new animal fetish will generate the most couch fees to be paid to the laddy by the door. No matter what the vote is, we are never going to purge ourselves of llamas and squirrels. But now we need another animal to create an animal trinity. Lemmings are just a one joke animal and ferrets remind me of Frank Burns of the 2077th. To make it work you need something as evil as a squirrel and as lovable as a llama. Or conversly we could pick an animal that brings new qualities that the prior ones lack. Maybe something that tastes good. (That leaves the crows out as no one likes eating crow.) |

Wombats - the dumb, stubborn bulldozer of the marsupial world. Lovely animal, but don't get in their way (they're unfamiliar with the phrase "go around"). Like most Aussie marsupials, not exactly bursting with what we call intelligence either. Platypus - well, they're poisonous. Are poisonous animals acceptable. If so, I submit Irukandji. Not a lot of personality, but you'll remember when you met them, even if they just brushed you as they passed by. Rodents? Don't make me pull out my Encyclopaedia Pedantica. Also, as above, there's a reason that Fruit Bats are also sometimes called Flying Foxes. "Little" is another word I wouldn't use to describe them (which makes that little ringtail possum all the braver for charging the Fruit Bat crash-climbing around our palm trees for their fruit). I'm totally with you there. I love crows. I like Australian Magpies more (unrelated to other magpies of the world, and generally only a bit smaller than your average crow/raven). They've a beautiful singing voice - sort of a deep, birdy ululation rather than a pretty trill. Perhaps you just have stupid crows where you live. ![]() New Caledonian Crows are quite the intelligent tool-user. I hear they do the servicing on Pirate Ninja Squirrel hovercars. I am finding myself barely able, but by the gods you make it hard. ![]() ...and they also satisfy Nate's requirement - you can dip them in chocolate. Quote:
Actually, any of the deadly sins will be fine thanks. Cheers, Marc |
