I wouldn't worry about running out of IP addresses too much... they thought it would happen back in the 90's (and it could have) but new methods of reducing required numbers came up - If we really wanted to, everyone in the world could be on the internet using IPv4. But of course that would require a lot of networking issues many would like to avoid. But it is possible!
As for the transition, I don't think it will be too bad. The main backbone of of the internet is greatly IPv6 compatible now, and compatibility is phasing in all the time. New computers are all IPv6 compatible, and a lot of new consumer equipment (like routers and switches, etc) is too. And as people, corporations, etc transition to IPv6, that will prevent the continuous expanding of IPv4 usage. Crisis averted! ![]() |

The weirdest one was a call my mum got quite a few years back - she must have been on the phone for a good 5-10 minutes chatting apparently about family before she realised it was the wrong number - it turned out that a lot of her elderly relatives had the same names as a lot of the caller's elderly relatives! |

When I moved into the village where I still live, 25 years ago or so, we had 4-digit phone numbers within the village. These days our "local" numbers are 6 digits, with a further 5 digits for the "area code". Generally, big places in the UK have long local numbers and short area codes, small places have short local numbers and long area codes.

Our area codes are three of four numbers, all start with a 0. That has been as long as I can remember. But, somewhere in '95, they added an extra number to the phone number. So, before we had 9 digits, now we have 10. The area code was unchanged. They added either a 3 or a 5. That's how you can now recognize an older (updated) number, the chance that a new number starts with a 3 or a 5 is much, much lower ![]() Last edited by Sweetpea; 04-04-2009 at 04:41 PM. When I was a teenager, you could still just dial 78-**** and still get the number. I remember an old boyfriend's mother complaining that my phone number had too many "8"s in it. It was 878-2868. Guess she had a point. |

But it actually is used. There's one number I use all the time (1-800-555-****.) It's a government number used for ELECTRONIC FEDERAL TAX PAYMENT SYSTEM, or EFTPS Voice Response System for short. That's the only place I've ever known it to be used aside from American TV- or movie-land. |

Download the Internet in case it runs out
OMG! I'm so glad you pointed me to this article about the possibility of the Internet running out of addresses. I don't know what I'd do if the Internet weren't available, so just to make sure I'll always have it, I downloaded a local copy. You can too, just click "Download the Internet". Make sure and give it a minute or two and that you have enough space!

Bee tee double you... what will happen when we run out of earth? Stuffs pretty bad in china and such, and I think its slowling creeping up on us here on the west... What do you think we should do? build some apartment complexes in the bottom of the ocean and convince some trolls that this is the latest place to live? Perhaps moon shipments? ![]() |
