Can you also provide the file that was giving an error?
Oy, it's much too big; that's why I couldn't upload it. It was an entire book! A very LONG book!

That could be why the conversion was failing; you may have been running out of memory.

As for telling whether a PDF is text or not, opening it in Adobe and doing ctrl-f and searching for a line of text will tell you quickly if it's real text or not.

Wow. Okay, I never knew that. Maybe that's why I always had such trouble with the Adobe search function. I would look for a term or phrase that I knew had to be in the file but came up empty.

As for running out of memory . . . never occurred to me that there would be a limit in terms of conversion. I mean, memory . . . where?

Does make you wonder if it's worthwhile upgrading to the 505. Doesn't it do better with PDFs all the way around and isn't Google making its books compatible with .lrf? OTOH, since those books are, by and large, available through a library, I'd have to be using a ton of PDFs I can't get anywhere else to make an upgrade worth the extra $200 (after the $100 rebate for turning in the 500)--and presuming I don't get extra coverage.

On your computer. Since you said it was a very very big file, and the issue seemed to be with pdfohtml.exe terminating unexpectedly, this might be consistent with running out of memory to do its thing.

My only other advice would be to redownload Calibre and install it again. But I doubt that would make any difference.

Ah. Okay.

No, I already re-downloaded Calibre. And you're right: makes no difference. But I learned something about real PDFs versus fake ones :-) Thanks.
