West coast US views of the carriers ...

AT&T and T-Mobile both use GSM, but there have been rumors that while AT&T's is compatible in Europe, T-Mobile USA uses an offbeat frequency not compatible in Europe.

AT&T you only use if if you want an iPhone, their customer service is horrific (not to mention their complete willingness to violate constitutional privacy rights (and the recent FISA bill gives them immunity from prosecution)), coverage is okay, but they drop calls left, right, and center. 3G iPhone customers regularly complain about getting better reception turning their 3G off and using 2G service.

Verizon is popular, decent coverage, decent customer service (for a cellphone company - cellphone companies in general rank below cable companies, Verizon is just the lesser of the evils).

MetroPCS just plain lacks coverage. And Sprint drops calls so often, they made it part of their logo. Sprint also seemed to be the worst hit by the recent financial crisis, several papers reported they were hemorrhaging customers faster than any of the other cell companies.

[and that has been my weekly rumor-mongering ]

Both AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM at 850 and 1900 MHz in the US. European GSM phones use either 900 or 1800 MHz. So called world phones are usually tri or quad-band GSM that support either all four GSM bands or two of the bands in the target market and one band in the other (usually the higher frequency band).

Just for added confusion, there are also different 3G bands - the US uses 1900 MHz while most other countries use 2100 MHz (until recently 2100 MHz was restricted to the military in the US).

I used to be a member of AT&T's international wireless care team - so I've seen international phone issues

We just bought a Sony Reader 700 for my wife yesterday. They are on sale for $349, which is a $50 savings. They were on sale in the store and online at the Sony website. Now's the time to get one.

I'm also trying to promote the Sony 505 because of my content of it.
When I see an article of the kindle, and can reply, I will. To make users aware that the Kindle is not the only device out there!

Sony deserves more customers, because their device looks nicer, and costs less. A valid reason to think of it as a good competitor to the Kindle.

I try to do the same thing. Sometimes the Kindle is a better choice for some people, but I at least like to let them know they have options.
