Whispernet wasn't a prime consideration for me when purchasing my Kindle1, and it isn't necessary for purchasing books.

Whispernet is nice but since the vast majority of my books are from other sources I don't need it.

While I'd rather feel comfortable with WN at all times, when there's a new, unknown update file, I'll keep WN off until its properties are established so as to not imperil the books which I obtain through use of Kindlefix. |

Just updated, and the UI definitely is faster. Page refreshes are faster. I can confirm at least one bugfix as well. When reading manga/comics (or viewing images in the pictures folder) "Partial Refresh" finally works. Whenever you turn the page, it blanks the screen, refreshes the top half of the page first, and then refreshes the bottom half of the screen so if you're reading comics/manga you can change pages even quicker. Works like butter.
Re-screensaver-hacked using kindle2_screen_saver_hack-0.3.zip and all is awesome. |

Kindle update 2.0.2 (309510017)
Looking at the published gnu linux kernel sources provided by Amazon, only 4 files are different: arch/arm/mach-mx3/dvfs_v2.c arch/arm/plat-mxc/isp1504xc.c arch/arm/plat-mxc/wdog.c sound/arm/mxc-alsa-pmic.c These are the kernel (2.6.22) mods from the last Kindle version, 2.0.1 (303870012). Until Amazon posts release notes, we won't really know what was different in the functioning of the Kindle software, but the kernel changes look like adding in a counter to reboot (6 times) and setting the minimal soundchannels to 2. Sorry if this sound stupid, but once you download the bin file how do you get it to install on the Kindle?

1. Connect Kindle 2 to computer 2. drag and drop "Update_kindle_2.0.2.bin" into the root folder of your Kindle 2 3. Unplug Kindle 2 and press Menu>Settings>Menu>Update Your Kindle When the update is done your Kindle 2 will reboot and you are finished. |

stupid auto update - but isallgood now
oh jeez... went to use my K2 this morning and it was already trying to DL the update. i have the screensaver hack (.3) on it and the updater is all cranky and infinate... it's been almost 2 hours since i first saw it "updating", and i don't know how to slap it. i know i need to install the restore binary, but she's not speaking to me!!! what should i do?
UPDATE (~noon)- ok held the slidey power/sleep button for ages and it finally stopped "updating". turned off whispernet as soon as she woke up, plugged into usb and removed old binary, put restore binary there. i have tried to reset by using the slidey power/sleep and the menu>settings>menu>restart> but am still getting the hack listed. arg. i can post somewhere else if this is not the appropriate place for these questions... will NOT use whispernet until i figure this out... but at least i can use my k2 again... UPDATE2 (~2p)- weird... i didn't do anything but leave it alone for 2hrs and now k2 has reverted to the old screensavers and no hack listed in settings page... i'll update once the k2 is updated UPDATE3 (2:30p)-weeeeeird. ok update happened via whispernet. checked settings page, updated to "2.0.2". plugged into computer via usb, the restore binary is gone. soooo... checked the system/screen_saver folder and yay, that's all there... threw on the hack again, restarted from the menu and....nothing. did the slidey power/sleep and got the updating screen. slidey again....aaaaaand we're good. yay! I tend to keep Whispernet off when I'm at the office because Sprint coverage here is poor at best... Just like a cellphone in an area with poor service the Kindle drains the battery much faster as it hunts for a signal. Having the Kindle at my office means I need to charge after just two days - keeping it at home I can go at least 4 days between charges...

I'm going to say something positive about Amazon even though I'm stilled ticked off at them. I'm happy that with Kindle 2 they are constantly sending updates to tweak the OS and make it run better. That didn't happen with K1 until just before K2 came out (the 1.2 update).

Well, amazon is updating the K2 without even telling their tech support or customers what they are changing. Its safe to assume amazon is turning into apple

While I love having my own pics for screen saver I am a bit concerned that one day I will be out there and the Kindle will try to do an update. I hope someone has some answers. castlenines, what ever happened? |
