That was pretty much my first reaction. I don't expect this to be good news for the consumer. But we shall see...

of course, but an ebook kiosk would be a great solution for people with liseuses which don't have any kind of 3G or wifi connection.

Never gonna happen, I know, but I can dream...
If the next gen readers are wi-fi enabled, why not pay in store and download direct to your Sony reader? No need for the mobile networks that are stopping Amazon spread outside the US. No need for Amazon's stranglehold.

It could even be done now to an I-phone with Stanza, that downloads to the phone via wi-fi.

True but the poster did mention the "Kindle" specifically. Maybe it was a mistake.

there seems to be a certain percentage of ebook readers who don't *want* their devices to have any kind of wi-fi connection, for various reasons (battery life, possibility for distractions, fear that a device which tries to "do it all" will have negative effects on their reading experience...). obviously for people who have / want connected devices, there is no need for any kind of additional in-store service ; however, these could cater to the people who aren't connected.

even if they *don't* add any in-store kiosks, they could easily add an "information point" or something similar to promote the availability of digital versions of their paper books, in only to raise awareness of them and encourage people who prefer ebooks not to completely write-off the paper book shop experience (which, i think, is a cherished tradition for a lot of people, not least people reading ebooks).

ha okay, i missed that. anyway, i suspect that B&N will want to encourage *other* devices since this really sets them up as direct competition to amazon. so they would be wise not to neglect sony / cybook / jetbook / etc. owners.

very wise, and also aware that Fictionwise has an International following, whereas Amazon do not.

What would be interesting would be an ebook kiosk that you could directly import the selected ebook(s) into the reading device .. using usb cord perhaps?

The kiosk itself, though, could download the ebook inventory via wi-fi (therefore be updated automatically and run with minimal supervision.)

hmm...

yep, that's exactly the sort of integration i would LOVE to see in physical bookshops. and the terminals could be set to connect directly to fictionwise, so there wouldn't be any local inventory management necessary.

I have to admit, I don't see kiosks as the future of ebook distribution. By the time B&N has digested their acquisition and figured out how (and if) they want to integrate eBooks into their brick-and-mortar stores, we're probably 2-3 years down the line (these things never seem to happen as fast as you want them too). By that time, if we don't at least have a wi-fi Sony Reader, I'll be amazed. That will mean that every major reader will have wireless capabilities. More and more capable stores accessible from the device seem to me the most likely future for ereaders - and I'm really not sure how that will tie-in to the brick-and-mortar experience.

Now, if Fictionwise goes epub, and B&N can get their prices competitive with Amazon, they may become a very nice alternative to the Sony ebook store for those of us with a Sony reader.

Same here, one way big companies thrive is to buy out the competition.

Pfft... one of the reasons I got my ebook reader was so I didn't have to schlep to a book store. I get most of my recommendations for reading reviews and forums like this one.

Brick and mortar ebook stores are not the wave of the future.

I agree BOb, I actually find it bothersome to have to schlep to the store when just about everything I want and need can be ordered online.

Maybe I'm a cynic but I don't think this will bode well. I can just see B&N closing Fictionwise in 6 months after deeming it unprofitable. While retaining all the rights to Fictionwise. And making a deal to leave the site accessible for current customers to get backups of their purchases for 1 year.

I should get a kitten or something...
