This is the 2nd edition that was published in July 2007. What edition does the Kindle have?

I bought the Merriam-Webster dictionary and have the repeated words on my Kindle 2. However, this seems only to occur when looking at the full page entry. It doesn't occur in the bottom-of-the-page preview, and the problem doesn't show up on my ipod Touch using the new Kindle app.

2nd response:

So for now the answer is "we don't know, we'll get back to you". I'll post when I learn more.
Finally got another response from Amazon on the "New American Oxford Dictionary".

The dictionary "New Oxford American Dictionary" that is included with the Kindle is not an abbreviated version. Since it is integrated with the Kindle it also has the ability to lookup words while you are reading other books. The dictionaries available in the Kindle Store, including the same "New Oxford American Dictionary", can be searched and read like any normal book.
If I'm reading the response correctly, the version in the Kindle store is "just a book" and not a dictionary that can replace the version we have as the default (although the Websters dictionary can). I don't know if this means some dictionaries are "books" and some can be used as a default and if so, how to tell which is which.

I'm still confused but no longer care enough to pursue further answers.

ACtually, someone posted in another thread that the one on the kindle is an older version than the one on the store. And that you can switch which dictionary is used. Although, I see no way to directly access the current one as a book.

On the Kindle 2 it's listed with the other books. You can open and read it if you want.

I have swapped the original dictionary for the Websters dictionary in both my K1 and K2 (mentioned in an earlier post on this thread). You do it through the settings menu.

How can I tell how old the original default dictionary is? If they one being sold is a newer version and has the ability to be swapped out (though the email I received doesn't seem to support that), we should be able to upgrade for free.

Why should you be upgraded for free? When you buy a dictionary at the store when a new edition comes out you have to pay for it... you can't just get the new one for free.

My Mac included iLife when I bought it. When the new iLife 09 came out I had to pay for it to get the new version.

I don't know what iLife is, so I can't relate to the example.

A dictionary doesn't change that much from year to year, so in reality, it really doesn't matter. Forget I said anything about it.

iLife is a bundle of software programs like iPhoto, iDVD, etc.

Ok... when you buy a PC that has Office 2003 on it... you don't get Office 2007 for free when it comes out.

Yes, I understand and agree and have used similar examples with people who think they should get free ebooks just because they own the paper book.

As I also said, dictionaries don't change that much so it really doesn't matter.

Not to change the subject or anything but does ANYONE like office 2007?

It came loaded on this laptop, and I haven't been able t0 figure out the new word 2007 yet. The "email this document" is 'greyed out', but the "fax this document" is in bold. Go figure.

I cannot say say how much I hate office 2007.

I've deleted everything, and have gone to openoffice.org.

I use Word 2007 but Office 2003 for Excel. I had to upgrade Word to help some people I was training who couldn't get Word 2003. Excel is not a heavily used program for me so I saw no need to upgrade.

I still use several old programs (can you say Paint Shop Pro 3 and 5) because they still work for me.
