In this case I think it's more what the publisher told him he could give away. This seems to be a publisher promo. It's on Scribd too. Random House has been doing a few free ebooks this way lately.

I've taken the PDF and cropped it so it has as little margins as possible. It's just readable on the 505.

It looked pretty good after a Mobipocket Creator --> Calibre --> Kindle conversion.

Doesn't the 505 support half-page reading?

On my 700, this pdf looks good either at M zoom or in half-page, both are quite readable without any cropping, just dumping the book on the PRS after putting the right metadata place

Is it just me or does this just...not look right on the 700?

I think the problem is that it is spit out from their design programs. So, all of the bleed that is supposed to get cut off from the printing press is visible. You can see the margin / sizes and bleed of mirror text and stuff on my copy. It also looks narrow, almost like watching a SD video feed on an HD monitor (complete with black bars and everything!)

pdf @ 8 by 11 inch papers can be viewed quite ok in landscape mode.
about half that (3 by 4) pagesize can comfortably read on a Sony reader.

Out of curiosity, what do you do the file in Calibre? If I use mobi creator, I usually go straight to the Kindle from there.

Zoom it to M or read it landscape and in either case it will look much better. Not perfect, but hey it's a free ebook ultimately..

I'm just learning conversions, so forgive this basic question. I was able to convert in Mobipocket Reader. But that's where I get lost with your conversion. How do I get it from Mobipocket to Calibre?

::: Edit ::: Ne-ver mind. I was looking for the Mobipocket output in the wrong place. I found it and it worked like a charm as far as I can tell without the K2 in my hands. But it didn't give me the DRM error, so I think I'm good to go. I hope.

Could you describe your process? I tried doing a Mobi Creator conversion on this and it came out horrible.

For me too, but that's better now :
Use MobiPocket Creator to generate a prc (horrible as you said !), then Calibre, to generate a .mobi from the .prc.
Much, much better then !

Boy, you're right when you say much better. I just wish there were indents at each paragraph.
