Not sure what you mean by tokens. I thought the situation was different with the countries mentioned in Tamblyn's message but it seems not. I hope this latest Beta iteration is more stable though.

Curious.

Looks like Kobo will be selling a subscription service that will allow the user to send books over email to their device. Something I remember Kindles having at one time.

I currently side load my books with Calibre.

Will this firmware in the future cripple devices, so that I cannot side load books with Calibre, forcing me to use the subscription service? That's probably my biggest fear after reading through this thread about this firmware.

My second biggest fear is that the 6.x firmware will burn through battery time faster as its new renderers require more CPU. Anybody look into this?

I got it automatically the last time (last week) I synchronized; so, no option asked if I want it or not.

I notice no difference in battery use.
Also I keep on being able to side load eBooks using Calibre or just copying them directly to the Kobo internal file system.

I believe that once you are on the 5.x / 6.x series of firmware you will receive any / all upgrades in the 6.x family.

The initial upgrade from 4.x to 5.x / 6.x is a manual process and is triggered by the user (at one point via an option under Settings / Accessibility but I'm not sure if that's still the location)

I'm not noticing any difference in that with Mu Libra Colour. The main issue is that the beer rendering engine makes many ePub types open slower. The subscription service is extra cost, so it's not mandatory. It does let me sync progress between sideloaded books uploaded to the service (using ePub files I bought from Black Library back when they offered downloads).

I can ask Gemini questions without tokens. I don't pay for any AI.

Not in my case, it jumped automatically from the 4.x to 6.0.279255 when I synchronized last week (as I said above).

I am probably going to update to the latest v6 after I finish my current book. It's a historical work, and I'm making a lot of notes and highlights. I understand that one of the outstanding issues is that annotations on sideloaded books are being lost, at least temporarily.

My workflow is that I sideload all books from Calibre, then after I finish a book where I have made notes, I export the annotations and attach them as a file to a review I write of the book on Evernote. So I am not worried about losing annotations of books I have already finished and saved elsewhere. But I wouldn't want to lose the many annotations I've made on this book so far.
