It seems, from my experiments, that there is absolutely no free option for using AI to generate covers in Calibre. You have to invest some value of cash into the AI providers hard-coded into Calibre to be able to create covers.

I use free AI to deal with covers when needed and it works well. I do it through a browser and not calibre.

I would do that, as well, if it was something that was important to me. I was strictly experimenting with a new tool in Calibre to see what the results would be. If the release notes had stated the tool was behind a paywall I wouldn't have bothered.
