So, I just went to set up ADE on my current computer, and you can still just authorize your current computer without an Adobe ID at all. Your books just aren't portable to another device. But since I sanitize my purchases right when I get them and keep everything in Calibre, device authorization at point of download works fine for me.

Are Adobe IDs useful if the store you bought from goes down?

So despite the error, these books now appear in "My Books" on Kobo, however the download link just downloads a DRM free epub directly (not an acsm). So same as ebooks.com.

At Kobo, DRM Free ePub mostly deliver KePub and not ePub. You would need to use the Modify ePub plugin to convert the KePub to ePub.

I've never got a kepub from Kobo, because I use Web Browser download. Kobo shop isn't locked to kobo ereaders.

Also the kepub is extra tags. Many epub readers/renderers might ignore them? It's quite different to KFX which is always encrypted.

I just downloaded this DRM Free eBook from my Kobo UK account. It is indeed a KePub eBook. Give it a try as it's free.

The extension will always be .epub, but the book will usually be a KEPUB file. It doesn't matter either way, since as Quoth said, the extra Kobo spans will be ignored by regular EPUB readers. An easy way to check is to run the book through kepubify: if the file size doesn't change, the book was already in KEPUB format.

Use Modify ePub to remove the KePub code. Then it will be a plain ePub. You then have it as ePub. ePub is a better format for keeping a copy of your eBook. Then you can convert it back to KePub if you want to read it that way on your Kobo.

I run every ebook through Calibre convert anyway to at least remove "white space" and "line height". Those can be appropriate for a website, not ebooks.

OK, I was half wrong, but the DRM-free downloaded files work even on an ancient Sony PRS-350.

Yes, the KePub will work as ePub. But if you are editing the eBook, then you would want the KePub code removed so it's easier to edit.
