So, I just went to set up ADE on my current computer, and you can still just authorize your current computer without an Adobe ID at all. Your books just aren't portable to another device. But since I sanitize my purchases right when I get them and keep everything in Calibre, device authorization at point of download works fine for me.
Are Adobe IDs useful if the store you bought from goes down? |

A follow up to this in case anyone is interested:
So despite the error, these books now appear in "My Books" on Kobo, however the download link just downloads a DRM free epub directly (not an acsm). So same as ebooks.com. |

At Kobo, DRM Free ePub mostly deliver KePub and not ePub. You would need to use the Modify ePub plugin to convert the KePub to ePub.

Also the kepub is extra tags. Many epub readers/renderers might ignore them? It's quite different to KFX which is always encrypted. |

The extension will always be .epub, but the book will usually be a KEPUB file. It doesn't matter either way, since as Quoth said, the extra Kobo spans will be ignored by regular EPUB readers. An easy way to check is to run the book through kepubify: if the file size doesn't change, the book was already in KEPUB format.

I run every ebook through Calibre convert anyway to at least remove "white space" and "line height". Those can be appropriate for a website, not ebooks.
