I have Kindle and Apple Books on my desktop. Never used an external reader.

I used to be like that.
Then I decided that high voltage in the bathtub was a bad idea.

I've never wanted to read books on my computer, phone or tablet. When I decided to switch from paper to ebooks, the first thing I did was to look for an eink reader. That was back in 2011 and nothing has changed for me. While I read web articles happily on my laptop/tablet/phone, almost never books. Those I read only on my ereaders and very seldom on paper.

OTOH, if you still read mostly paper books and only occasionally ebooks, it wouldn't make sense to buy a dedicated ereader. Most of the longtime active posters here prefer ebooks to paper or can no longer even read paper books due to eye or hand problems.

I read and reply in this forum on my computer. But I read most articles and browse most forums on my Android e-reader devices. I use an LCD screen mostly for dynamic content or very short text forms. Or for writing.
