The one that opens from the desktop calls ebook-viewer.exe
from the library it spawns a process. I suspect the 3rd party firewall is overly aggressive? (I would expect that the calibre Editor would also have issues)

Yes, but it didn't work when I had that completely turned off. And now it's working, and that firewall is on. So...I don't know.

And no, I haven't had any issues with the main program at all, including the editor.

At the process level I can't see any difference in Task Manager between viewing an epub via the calibre library manager, and viewing an epub that has never been anywhere near calibre until I opened it from File Manager.

The one boxed in green (AI and Digital Leadership) was opened from my file manager, the one boxed in red (The Bankers New Clothes) was opened from the calibre library manager.

As always, YMMV.

Oh, and when it wasn't working, I did try both directly opening a book from the main program and by going to a book that wasn't in Calibre, so...

I didn't think so, so just double checked, and no, it isn't.

And I just give up. Nothing is opening again. *sigh* Guess I'll use a different reader.

Edit:

I tried two books, and though they took 8 or 9 minutes, they both finally opened. lol
