If you have Wi-Fi turned on, you don't have to do anything. It's automatic. But it's already clear that I always have it turned on and you always have it turned off. These are different ways of looking at things. You have the option of using or not using synchronisation on a Kindle, but I don't have that option on a Kobo. I simply cannot synchronise via Wi-Fi (external content). And that's something that doesn't happen to me with Kindle, PocketBook, or my Android e-readers. Only with Kobo. What for you is not a shortcoming of Kobo, for me it is.

By the way, for those who don't know what new page interface we're talking about, you can see it here...

Oh, that is quite a difference, and yes it's awful. Is that with a new firmware update (cuz if so, I may want to try to block it).

Kindles are so much cheaper than their competition.
The way I see this going is the same as other tech. The ideal solution is going to be third party firmware and buying and side loading books independent of device. This is what I had to do to with my routers at home as companies stop supporting and updating them. I switched from Kindle to KOBO, and I've only updated it twice. The last time I didn't have that boot loop issue, so I was lucky. I do like the KOBO interface better than the Kindle one. And I do like being able to download all of my books. But their last update cause a lot of trouble for users. My significant other is thinking about jail-breaking their Kindle and loading third party software. They already only buy their books from KOBO now and side load them onto their Kindle. Because Kindles have the better price point, what I see happening is folks buying Kindles for cheap, replacing the firmware, and then side loading via purchases, where you download books. That's the future for those technical able. I don't see Kindles slowly dying. |

They aren't replacing the firmware, it's a very common misconception. It's a jailbreak, in that it means they can run 3rd party code. It still just runs on top of the normal Kindle OS. And, you don't need to jailbreak to read sideloaded content as Kindles support sideloading stock. That's another misconception. They just don't read EPUB format natively.

Like (almost) all interface changes, it has not made a good impression. When you get used to a certain way of seeing things, changes are generally unwelcome. It is the same interface they use in the Kindle App. They are standardising.

Kobo has been cheaper then Amazon. The Kindle Colorsoft is more expensive then the Kobo Libra Colour.

It was like that with Kobo going from the version 3 firmware to the version 4 firmware. It was a completely different home screen. But you do get used to the current UI.

Making a dedicated ereader on eink have the same UI as an app for iOS/Android on not-eink is stupid. Or vice versa.
