I used my kindle last week here in Chicago. I read outside when it was -20 while waiting for the train, and then put it in the outside pocket of my briefcase. No problems. I guess I am just lucky!

If the temperature ever falls below -10C I will deem it an emergency fully justifying setting my reader on fire in order to generate some warmth in order to survive.

I think you are correct. When I see the weather in different parts of the world on TV and then read serious threads at MR on how to avoid damaging readers in extreme cold I am filled with both admiration and feeling of inadequacy.

I have always kept my Kindle at around room temp, but it wasn't until after reading this story that I forgot it in my car last night where it was around 19F. I brought it inside to warm up and it works the same as it did the day it arrived from Amazon.

![]() I am so thankful for this thread! I am very careful with my readers, PDA, etc. but leave my GPS device in a locked compartment in my car. Thankfully, our winters don't get too terribly cold here, but I am taking it out of the car right away! Kaz |

You know, the more I read this thread the more I think that this guy had a defective unit.

I've done good online though with finding books and finding a lot of the books I already owned free online so I have all but two books of my collection on my reader. I just don't have the spare money to get the other two just yet. Though I agree that it's a blessing more so for my paper books that me. I mainly got it because I read the same things over and over again. I have a bad memory so it doesn't bother me at all. My paper books however suffer greatly from that. The spines are wearing out on most of them. I give it about a year or so before the page turn button starts to wear on my 505 =^.^= |

I've carried and used my reader in -15C or thereabouts, also left it in the car at -20C for hours. Page turning was slower, and I made sure I put it in a bag before going indoors (to avoid condensation, letting it warm up bagged out in the cold) . And I guess battery was drained more quickly. But my 505 is still alive
![]() Also my gps lives in the car (coldest so far this winter has been around -25C) and it is fine. |

I live in the Northeast Ohio Snow Belt. Have carried my Sony PRS-500 for 2 ½ years most everywhere, including, when I walk my dogs and when cross county skiing, (preferably I leave it in my van in case I fall). I do keep it in a plastic bag for protection from wet, & to some extent, cold. So far no problems, knock on wood
