I need to ask what sync you are refering to here. Are you talking about syncing your sideloaded books from your calibre library to the kobo servers, or are you meaning syncing with calibre?

I expect it's the syncing of side loaded content from the device to the cloud, allowing for things like syncing of reading progress between multiple devices.

I wonder if that could actually work without modifying how Calibre works with kobo devices. Currently Calibre converts files to kepub at device sync, right? So it doesn't keep the kepub to send it to future devices. That means that the file hash might be different for each converted kepub on different devices. I assume that the kobo server would need the exact same files on every device for reading progress sync to work, but Idk.
