This should allow the driver to work with 9p filesystems as well.

That seemed to work. When I have more time I'll do more testing of plugins. I did try Kobo Utilities and it had problems with an apsw error on the Check Database option. I didn't have time to gather logs but will in a few hours.

I'm afraid getting third party plugins working is not really something I am going to spend time on, if they have issues you will need to report them to the developer of the plugin and hopefully he can adapt the approach I have used in his plugin.

That was my intention. Thanks for all your work on this idea though

I bet by now you're getting quite tired of me! I've come across a really weird side effect.

I'm reading an Overdrive library loan fulfilled via the Kobo library. The book is listed on the device as being of type Overdrive. I connect to the device via calibre, then perform some operations (say send books to the Kobo) and disconnect.

When I unplug the Kobo the book now shows as being no on the device (yes; it shows up in the view of books on the device) however, it has an open arrow next it indicating that it's not physically on the device. I perform a sync with the Kobo cloud, the book downloads. Sometimes I'm at the correct location in the book; other times I've reverted to a previous reading location.

I'm going to have to do a lot more digging to track down what might be happening here.

Is this specific to using the Kobo via 9p or does it happen with a direct connection as well?

I'll experiment tomorrow; I think I have access to a PC where I can try things out.

I did try some testing out today with just connecting calibre to the 9p folder and disconnecting with no usage of Kobo Utilities or automatic meta data management.

sqldiff showed no differences in the databases before connect and after disconnect.

The Kobo post disconnect also had a sqlite-shm and sqlite-wal file present.

That would be more or less normal since when the database is in use, those files would be present.

In case anyone is wondering?
9p is from Plan9

Quote:
* Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL): since Windows 10 version 1903, the subsystem implements 9P as a server and the host Windows operating system acts as a client.
* Crostini: a custom 9P server is used to provide access to files outside of a Linux VM.
* QEMU: the VirtFS device allows for filesystem sharing over 9P, which is accelerated with kernel drivers and shared memory
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9P_(protocol)

So perhaps testing is also possible with WSL and Linux Calibre on WSL? Or maybe I'm writing rubbish.

Crostini is the Linux based on Debiam 12 in the "penguin" container on a ChromeBook, which works better than I thought it would.

I may be missing something, but the way the Database class copies the database around doesn't seem at all threadsafe to me. What happens in the following situation:
  • Thread A copies database to temporary location A and makes some changes
  • Thread B copies database to temporary location B and makes some changes
  • Thread A copies database back to the device
  • Thread B copies database back to the device
The changes thread A made would be lost. Or is there something in the architecture of Calibre that prevents this situation from happening?
