Yes. Also, if there was a download limit I would expect we'd get an error message, not just a spinner that never goes away. I sometimes get an error message about free books I've bought that are in a format my Oasis can't handle and I just delete them from my list.

I think that's nonsense from CS.

Obviously something is broken, but not universally broken and if they know, CS don't or have been told to bluff (CS likely works from scripts).

20 downloads per month is a ridiculously low limit; that's not even one a day. I can't believe it on that basis alone. For customers without WiFi that could be a significant restriction on purchases and surely that can't be Amazon's intent.

If it were true and someone was laggard about downloading books, well, they'll never get caught up now! It would be years in my case and I'm an absolute piker in regard to Kindle books compared to many. In fact, I haven't "future-proofed" my Kindle library; I'm content to read on a Kindle device for now and will take my chances as regards the future.

I suspect that the support person was confusing this with the number of concurrent borrows allowed under Kindle Unlimited.

I think that 20 downloads per month is pure hogwash. They must have confused D&T with KU (which is 20 loans per month).

Edit: ninja'd!

That's 20 concurrent loans not 20 loans per month. One person I know ran into issues when they went through over 200 KU loans per month back in the 'good old days" when you could download and transfer KU loans. After a few months of this, Amazon's algorithms got suspicious.

None of this really gets us anywhere.
So the review make take a looong time, but once they review it will be immediate action.

Yes, quite. Not exactly inspiring, is it?

I guess that we just need a lot of folk to notice that there's a problem, and to moan at Amazon about it.

I want to add my experience here, in case it's helpful to anyone:

I have three Kindles registered: one Kindle Paperwhite from 2015, one Paperwhite (11th gen) from 2023, and one Fire from 2021.

I've always used the "download & transfer via USB" option to liberate my ebooks via Calibre. Last week was the last time I used it successfully (December 4), and then I tried it again yesterday to download the new 12 ebooks that I'd bought.

I got the graying circle thing. After trying Kindle for PC and hooking up my Kindle to my laptop, I gave up and used Amazon chat to talk with two representatives. I pointed out that my Kindles weren't 2024 models and that I wanted to use the "deliver" option as well as the download option, just in case I was in an area with bad wifi.

They had me update my 2023 Kindle to the latest software and then they said they'd do an internal ticket and that my issue would be resolved within 24 to 48 hours. They said it was a tech glitch issue known to them.

Today, it's all resolved, and the deliver AND download options are both back for me. I've successfully downloaded the last 12 ebooks, and I even bought 10+ new ebooks today, just to test them out. All were successfully downloaded, and I have certainly gone past the 20 ebook download limit.

Hope that helps!

I'm pleased to say that the option to download and transfer by USB is now functioning as normal for me. I've just managed to download the two books that I was trying to get yesterday. (And I've liberated them and got them onto my Kobo, but let's not tell Amazon that bit.)

It does look as if there was a server problem affecting some customers, and Amazon have now fixed it.

Are all of your Kindles on the latest software update? So all the people out there having a problem will need to update to the latest software to fix "known issue"?

Conceptually, this certainly doesn't make sense to me. As you say,

Sure, the device firmware might make a difference to downloading books to it by wi-fi. But why should the firmware on a user's device make any difference to their ability to download from Amazon's server to a PC/Mac/whatever? No, I don't buy it.

In any case, yesterday I couldn't download books to my PC, whilst I can today. Downloading to it by wi-fi worked yesterday. I haven't updated the firmware on my Paperwhite in the interim. I'm still on version 5.16.9, which isn't the latest for my e-reader - that's 5.17.1.0.3, according to Amazon's website.

The SW update is irrelevant. I get D&T for all my kindles, though I mostly use the PW3.
My PW3 is 5.16.2.1
My K3 is 3.4.3
My DXG is 2.5.8 (though it only gets old mobi downloads)

I thought this was most likely a server issue only affecting some people, and it seems it was. My D&T on newly bought books wasn't affected. Amazon uses very many servers even in one marketplace.

I had noticed that the "Wish List" thing I have with only ebooks in it had gone very slow a few days ago.

Getting people to update is standard CS for almost every big company. Even though it might "break" something (older graphics card and new Driver, MS often breaks things).
Also with Kindle you can't roll back, unlike Kobo or a Graphics card.
