Clara BW How to start sideload mode without a Kobo account?

I know its probably a dumb question but why hobble yourself by going sideloaded mode.

At least initially try a full setup and get the full experience. Nothing prevents you then doing a full reset and switching

Interesting. When I last tried, I selected the dictionaries I wanted, and then I did a sync to download them. I did not need to sign in to an account.

Official Kobo dictionaries go into the .kobo/dict folder, custom dictionaries go into the .kobo/custom-dict folder. For me, this simply keeps the custom dictionaries safe during a firmware update.

I don't have an account (or a device yet), so no syncing going to happen.

Uh, what exactly did you do if you don't have a device? You can sync without an account, but you can only download dictionaries and firmware updates by syncing when you're in sideload mode, since you don't have an account to sync books from.

You download them from Kobo. I think you can still do this in sideloaded mode. See if under the More => Settings Menu, if there is a Languages and dictionaries item.

Did you read my suggestion about going More => Settings => Languages and dictionaries? You need a Kobo device to do that not just connecting to the Kobo website unless you use the direct download links which do not seem to require an account. If you found a dictionary on the Kobo website, it is not one intended for use on a Kobo device but rather an ebook which you would need an account to download.

And no need to have a Kobo device to have a Kobo account. One friend of mine uses Kobo as their primary source of ebooks but their reading device is a old Nook for which B&N is not an option since they do not operate outside the USA. I've spent too much time trying to convince them that a newer device would be something they should look into purchasing.

Basically, you can use several tools to convert a StarDict dictionary for use with a Kobo reader. My tool of choice is PyGlossary. For the most part, I've ended up converting dictionaries for others since I installed PyGlossary for the custom English dicitionary.

You can also check the List of Official Kobo Dictionaries (v3) for links and the Index of Custom Dictionaries for Kobo eReader threads for more information on custom dictionaries.

If you take the V3 out of the URL of the Kobo English dictionary, you still get a download. I have no idea what version that one is.
