This thread has been really useful, so thanks, everyone.
I almost paid £20 for the heavy and bulky Sony eReader charger, since I had tried to charge my eReader using an iPod wall charger and the supplied cable without success. However since I was fed up with having to carry yet another charging device on holiday, I did a search on here and realised that I only neeeded a USB to PSP 2 in 1 Retraction Data Charge Link Cable. EBay supplied one for £3.99 plus postage. It works beautifully with the USB port in the iPod charger to charge my Sony 505. It is also tiny and weighs practically nothing. Very pleased! |

Have a look at this thread too for a possible option.. My Suggestion For PRS-505 Charger Perhaps this can help too.. It's what I used.. I like Clarinda's option it's probably a lot more compact than the one I have.. AM |

Sry to bump an old thread...
I bought a 5in1 HS Universal AC power adapter (charges: PSP, DSi, DS lite, ...) from Walmart. +5V 1A. I plugged into my PRS and it started charging for a minute, but then the adapter stopped working completely (burnt). The PRS is fine. Question. Why did it burn out? I have 2 other USB chargers, 5V 1000mA (charges ipod touch), and another 5V DC300mA+/-50mA (ipod won't charge). Both of these seem to light up the PRS charging LED. Which one would be safer/better and not burn neither the PRS nor itself? thanks, |

Not all transformers are created equal. Anything converting wall power for electronics runs power through coils via induction. This effect also cannot go on forever. Eventually the coating on the wires in the coils wears out, shorts develop, and the transformer itself fails.
I've used stuff like this in the past on my Sony Reader, haven't had any burn out on me yet. I'd chalk this up to it being 'time' for that adapter to just die. A transformer can really only fail while current is applied, so it isn't uncommon for it to do it shortly after being plugged in if it was already close to dying. That said, if this was brand new, it was likely defective. |
