The "made-up" page count has the advantages of not changing with font size changes, of being consistent for the same book across devices, and consistent with other books in terms of objective length. But sure, let's watch that number change with each flip. And exactly why? Because it's a preference carried forward from pbooks.

Sigh.
I do sometimes look at the page count for the chapter to decide if I have time to read the chapter.

Hmm, never considered that ambient light could force users to change font size when you could just increase the back-lighting. I guess that is not an option for users with older readers without backlighting.
Sure you can put a font size of 1em in body (excess code not needed), but it can be overridden in p with a smaller font size. I've seen too many eBooks that have fonts smaller then 1em for the main body text. I also don't like smaller offset text so that has to be changed as well.

When I am done editing an eBook, the page number I get from ADE is a lot more accurate.

I use kepub and the '1 screen=1 page' is mostly accurate. It's not perfect, but for the most part, every screen flip changes the page number for me.

Of course, kepub page count would be useless in the Kobo store, where I believe they use ePub pages for length.
Publishers use some version print page number for eBooks. They don't say if it's a hardcover, mass market paperback, or a trade paperback. So you may not know which page count is used.

They used to do that on reprints of PD books to save on paper.

Maybe now the publishers are doing it to save on...

When I'm reading the book, '1 screen=1page' does blow up the page count. I am aware of that and can live with it. For me at least, knowing the next chapter is made up of fifteen screens instead of thirty-two is handy. I always struggled trying to read ePub on a break (when time matters), because when my reader said there were two pages left in a chapter that could be anything from two to seven page turns.
With my settings, the worst I get is two screens for one page number or one page number is skipped on the screen change.

I've seem small, 0.9xxx, 0.7xxx, and other numbers for the body font size.

Also "small" from a big publisher.

I meant those in Calibre by the page count plugin, not embedded in the book. I'm not going to do page numbers manually for every individual book.

If I am converting from ePub to KF8,the KF8 gets a total page count that matches the ePub and I have the ePub page count column set to do pages for KF8.

Using epub.
I experimented with kepub early on a couple of years ago, but for my use I never saw any advantage to it, so kept my workflow simple and remained with epub.

Sure, I can understand that.
I guess I am only considering my personal usage here, rather than communal usage.

Yes, but what has this to do with Kobo displaying or not displaying page numbers? KF8 is a Kindle format. Kindles display custom page numbers in any case.

If you want 1 screen = 1 page (more or less), then kepub is the way to go.

Sadly, if you are counting screen pages, font size, margins, padding, choice of font, images and inline images will all affect that count.

The book I'm currently reading, Hawke's Prey, excellent so far, changes page count depending on font choice/size. So it's telling me just how many page turns I have left. Just what I prefer it to do.
