It still works fine with NickelMenu. You'll probably want a sleep cover if you want to use it via direct configuration changes, since you won't be able to wake the e-reader with the power button after it goes to sleep until you revert the configuration option.

I have the DXG, better screen. It's one of the worst ereaders of that era. Only 150 dpi, really slow. Listing mess up if battery goes flat due to loss of time/date which can only be set Over the Air. Most are 3G only. Only does old mobi and PDF (badly). No embedded fonts in ebooks.
Worst gadget I ever bought. It's also too grey with no front light for poor eyesight, the DX version is greyer. |

I have the last gen Paperwhite and one thing that helps me is to refresh on every page turn. It will use more battery, but clearer text is worth it to me.

For what this may be worth, my wife and I were visiting an old friend over the weekend. He loves to read but his eyesight has deteriorated to the point where large text books are not readable without a magnifier. We brought over a Sage, a Libra 2 and a Clara HD for him to try out. He was actually happiest with the Clara HD. Basically, it was the lightest and easiest for him to hold plus the price couldn't be beat. He could get more text on screen with the Sage and Libra 2 but was happy with the Clara HD's display. I'm adding a bunch of PD ebooks that we decided on and will drop the Clara HD off next weekend.

Public Domain. Old books. Think The Wizard of Oz, Moby Dick, Great Expectations, The Scarlet Letter or Pride and Prejudice. Check out StandardEbooks. They have all sorts of nicely formatted public domain books for free download.
Now that I have written 'StandardEbooks' a certain user will come along to helpfully explain to me that their formatting is in fact not good and he knows more than what my lying eyes tell me. It's part of the fun of the board. Last edited by ZodWallop; 06-13-2023 at 09:11 AM. |

Books where the copyright has expired, so you can freely copy. A "free" download from a book seller (common with retail ebooks) isn't PD, it's just a zero charge and is subject to copyright, a friend needs to download their own copy. Maybe one retail site also does some PD books. Also retail sold Classic/Old ebooks and paper books may be actually PD, so don't waste money buying them unless you can't find a PD copy on Gutenberg or similar. Unfortunately the Internet Archive offers copyright and PD ebooks (mostly not real ebooks, but PDF scans and epub/Kindle conversions from OCR without proofing) and they do not properly check that that they are not violating copyright with their offer of a free download.
CC (creative commons) is copyright where the holder says they are not charging. CC zero can be copied to anyone. But CC, even CC zero is not PD. |

It would be better for posters to tone it down. It's one thing to respond, it's another to deliberately poke the beast and then preemptively attack. Also to be eschewed is to travel from attacking a post to characterizing a poster. Thanks.

Here is a screen grab from my Libra 2 using a fairly large font and how good it looks. This is using ChareInk6SP (with the smaller space) and the better hyphenation dictionary.
