I understand all of this, but I like their store and choose to continue shopping there. I know I'm in the minority of MR members.

I'm really hoping this marketing is an aberration and not a trend. The last thing my budget needs right now is some bozo in the houses with a clue. It's much cheaper to ignore a series and pretend that I would have no interest in it than to be lured into yet another line of books with the temptation of the first volume being free or low priced. (Oh sure, the first ones are always cheap. And safe. And all the cool kids are reading it.)

That's why the drug dealers always give you the first taste for free. To get you hooked. After that you MUST have it.

Thanks for pointing us to this offer.
I started the book yesterday, just read the first chapter but so far it's very good.

By the way does someone already researched which store have the best price for the two sequels in LIT format?

Jim Baen described the Baen Free Library this way: "Come on, kid... First hit's free!"

Sorry... I just went by a quick description. Fantasy is a sub-genre of SF in most books stores.

Well in the same shelf, not a sub-genre. They're lumped together.

Nitpicky I am.

The Kindle edition is now for sale for $1 at Amazon. Took them long enough to catch up!

And the Kindle Daily Post on 6 January says, "Orbit has launched a promotion offering one ebook for sale each month through June at the introductory price of one dollar. This promotion has kicked off with The Way of Shadows by debut author Brent Weeks, to be followed by books from Karen Miller, Jaye Wells, Brian Ruckley, Marie Brennan, and science fiction great Iain M. Banks."

I was actually thinking about buying this one a month or two ago. Just got it from FW in Lit & eReader for the grand total of $0. Gotta love it.

It's available in eReader and in MS Reader both, or at least it was as of last night.

My apology to AnemicOak and jchestnutt.

I acquired the book from Fictionwise when it was free and forgot about doing so. This book is available in MSReader format.
