this is an interesting discussion, but - - -

We just shifted away from DST to standard time, and my Kindle PW Generation 10 didn't automatically make the change. There is a setting to make invoke the shift, but the whole point of this discussion was that Kindle time cannot be set manually, but rather slaves from WiFi, but in fact that's not what just happened.

And minor frustration - there is a time setting, but it's hidden in a place that is not at all intuitive.

Some places don't change the clock twice a year. No Kindle I've seen has a Time Zone setting, i.e. currently Ireland, Portugal & UK share TZ (Dublin, Lisbon & London) and change the clock, but countries closer to the tropics or in them, or much closer in entirety to poles don't change the clock.

Some Kindles don't set the time from WiFi/Mobile, only the date. Perhaps the rational is that your Kindle Market place may be in a different country or you might be travelling.

And there is no date setting?

Maybe leverage a firewall?

I agree you shouldn't have to connect to a WLAN but, as others have posted, this is possibly a strategy by Amazon to prevent bogus dates from purposefully being set to avoid loan deadlines etc. (Hope they never discover that Airplane Mode does the job too...)

If you're geeky and have low level access to your router, you could potentially set up a firewall setting for the Kindle that blocks all but NTP port 123. Maybe that would allow it to set its time while other services think there's no connection.

My mom had similar electronics when she died as well. However, she didn't set them up herself. I can't imagine her pulling a new WiFi router out of a box, hooking it up, and getting everything working with her devices on her own.
