I bought a Kindle book ($10!) on the double points day and got no points at all.

This happens far too frequently with Kindle promotions; how much time do you spend chasing a trivial sum? Contacting cs always takes forever. And yet there’s a bait and switch aspect to these faulty promotions that’s infuriating.

My only rational course is to give up on the program. If the points fall into my lap that’s fine, but I’m not going to participate in any more dodgy promotions that involve my spending money for a dubious outcome.

I just bought cheap books I was already buying ($1.99) and got my $3. Used it on an already discounted book on my wishlist (so $.99 instead of $3.99). I'm not making any effort to use the program, but just like my occasional shipping credit, I'll use it to cut prices on my wishlisted books. I have so many books - I can wait.

I am surprised that the big publishers haven’t raised a stink over the new points system. It seems designed to work around the restrictions of agency pricing.

I thought Kobo does this also.

In any case, it doesn't change what publishers get, and all they need to know is that it might get people to purchase more books.

Actual discounts also would not change what publishers get, and might get people to buy more books.

I sometimes get limited time $5 off deals after reading a book for other books by the same author/publisher. I assume that is with the blessings of the publisher, and yeah, I've taken them up on it on occasion.

As it is, publishers do opt to put some of their back list on sale (simultaneously on the main ebook sellers). It's not Amazon doing it.

I assume Points are meant to function the way credit cards give you cash back and that sort of thing. Applied psychology to keep you buying things you don't neccessarily need.

This seems to also be a thing of some sorts for normal books. I saw the points stuff appear when I was buying some hardcover and paperback books.

Huh. I bought a $7 and got points. When I was browsing it showed me the 'normal' amount (so 35 for $7), but when I checked my total later, I had gotten 70 points.
