Depending on his computer meeting the requisites, he could try an in-place upgrade to Windows 11. I've done more of those than I care to think about and so far only one computer had an issue and that was due an odd motherboard chipset issue that was fixable.

I've done this on 4-5 systems to good effect; not mine, colleagues/friends, they were invariably well pleased.

Thanks for that link. It looks straightforward. Do I need to change the PC startup option to boot from the USB drive if I use that option?

I've just done the In-Place upgrade which went very smoothly and surprisingly quickly. The icons on my desktop are all over the place and need sorting out but apart from that everything seems fine and I have now installed Calibre 6.

Thanks for all the help guys.

We've learned one important thing. Even if you run Windows 10, Calibre 6 can still fail to run if Windows 10 is too old.

The moral of the story here is, I think: don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There was no need to completely cripple the Windows Update Service when simply disabling auto updates would have sufficed. I'm afraid I wouldn't trust anything but a fresh install of the OS under these circumstances. An in-place update of an OS with a hosed registry sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

My question now is...Do updates work after the Windows 10 update or are they still hosed?

No idea thought I've turned them off using the gpedit method that was suggested. The options certainly weren't greyed out as they were previously

I'm not really bothered about updates, all I wanted was to get Calibre 6 working which it is thanks to the help on here.

All's well that ends well.

You can still disable the auto updates now that everything is working. Nothing wrong with deciding when you might want to update.
