OMG, that Logitech "Spotlight" costs more than a Walmart tablet!
And it has a laser! "YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT, KID!"
And it's big, too.

I know, I know, I've posted this everywhere already, but I LOVE my clicker. Doing stuff on a small scale is expensive but it makes me consider getting a dozen orders for $50 and making more.

The black clicker looks interesting. Where to go and order for it? $50 for a dozen sounds reasonable.

For that "Spotlight" thing - the cheapest one I got is from Ebay at $30 for one unit, without the USB receiver. They were trending at $40-60 for the recent year or two. My excuse for buying another is always, well, I'll cook the next meal myself, lol.

Ha, ha. $50 each. Why?
The case is $9, the Cypress Bluetooth module is $10, the PCB $3, switches, battery clips, battery, LED, capacitors, resistor, let's call it $25.
Then you have to solder it all up, program it, a bit of drilling and modification on the case, packaging, shipping. I'd be lucky to get minimum wage out of it.

Sounds like a lot of fun to make a clicker of your own! I guess I mistook what you mean by "it makes me consider getting a dozen orders for $50 and making more".

To justify for a price-tag at double of the parts' worth, I would wish those buttons to do some magical stuff. Assuming there are four buttons, well:
* Button 1: swipe from the middle of the tablet to the left, thus simulating a finger-swipe event to turn pages, and
* Button 2: swipe from the middle of the tablet to the right ...
* Button 3: specific to Boox device - toggle the orientation of the display between Portrait and Landscape, and
* Button 4: lastly, specific to Boox device again - well, may the button toggle their "Finger Touch" feature.

That's the wishlist, and my willingness-to-pay for such a clicker is $100 for the first one, and $50 for a backup unit I think the Logitech Spotlight was priced at $100 upon release.

Lol! You really need to Google "BOM cost vs retail price". Charging 2 x BOM is charity. How much do you think Logitech pays for the BOM (Bill of Materials) on the Spotlight? I'll be surprised if it breaks $5. Heck, I'd be surprised if the unit price out of China exceeds $5.

Using a pushbutton to generate gestures is just going through a needless translation. A pushbutton should generate a KeyEvent or an Intent.

My key fob does PgDn, PgUp, Menu & Sleep (because I put it on a stand and like to put it to sleep and just roll over and go to sleep myself).

Then, apparently, I have no idea what I was talking about.

Well, I think that I've been a bit stupid because despite all the goofy interceptions and stuff, it's probably just a case of the keylayout. This is /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl for the Poke3.
Code:
key 115 VOLUME_UP
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN
key 102 HOME
key 528 FOCUS
key 766 CAMERA
My dtb in boot.img only has VolUp (and no VolDn), which is strange.

Here's a simplified diagram I just made of how keys work. Your side keys are lots more complicated because they are intercepted somewhere and they get turned into a string and get processed through res/raw/keypad.json (or res/raw/bt_keypad.json) in /system/framework/framework-res.apk. That causes your PgDn to work only when you release the button (instead of when pressing) because it has to wait to determine short/long press. I defeated that on my Poke3 because it drove me crazy.

You're going to have to change the keylayout. Me, I'd change the dtb too (because it's easy and just a single change to the boot.img that doesn't need to be a Magisk module).

In any case, your first step has to be getting boot.img so that you can Magisk.
