The weakest part of an eink device is not the screen itself, but the substrate inside the screen. It breaks much more easily than the topmost part of the screen. The glass or plastic covering the screen is usually unbroken, but the substrate inside can still break, if you drop the reader or put something heavy on it. So bear that in mind. Eink needs gentler handling than your average tablet or phone.

You can now disable the header, footer or both on an unmodified Kobo. There's a setting for it.

Not sure if that is still true. If it is, it very easy to change, even if you are completely computer illiterate.

I did up buying a Forma from Fnac, they were running some exclusive online sale yesterday and it was 20% off. I'll be picking it up latter today so I'll check that out! Regarding protection for these ereaders, is it worth buying a case? I was leaning more towards a sleeve if I'm going to carry it inside a bag and have it naked when in the hand... |

If you're going to carry it in the bag, a case or cover would be a good idea. Personally I keep my readers in sleeves when not in use, but then I only use them at home.

A sleeve should be fine for a Forma unless you're particularly careless/prone to abusing it. It's got a flexible plastic substrate.

That's not correct about the power button. It's because it's a lot more convenient to have a sleep cover. My power button is not crap but I prefer the sleep cover.
