Must try that! Thanks Zelda.
I wouldn't have thought cheese and brussels sprouts would go well together - but now I'm intrigued to find out.

Starting about two days before Christmas, I gather up all of my slasher film DVDs. The Hostel, any of the Saw movies, even the golden oldies like the Freddy Kruger films.

I then have a non-stop slasher film fest from the 24th through the 2nd of January.

Before anyone says "wtf"?? I am not a Christian and have no family anywhere near me. I refuse to travel during the holidays. Therefore, the Christmas season is a really quiet and frankly lonely time around this house. It's the one week I do not pop in at my neighbors' houses ... I'd rather let them have their family time in peace.

Watching slasher movies during this season makes me feel really good in comparison to what the characters in the film are experiencing. They help me put life into perspective and make me feel strangely optimistic about the new year. I mean .... no one has me chained in a tiny room expecting me to saw my own leg off .... no creepy character is popping into my dreams ... life is pretty damned good actually.

So, at this house the "Slasher Holidays" are a grand end of the year tradition ... going on almost 25 years.

And I hope you all have a great holiday as well!!

In the UK we have a Christmas tradition of reading/watching/telling genteel Victorian/Edwardian ghost stories - but a slasher fest?!?
It'd frighten off Santa.

Ah, but you see, Santa does not come to this house. So, not to worry.

One thing I always assciate with Christmas day, but that I usually miss, is the Queen's Speech. From memory this is typically broadcast about the time most people have just finished their Christmas Lunch. What sticks in my mind is mostly calls for various types of tolerance and the trials that the past year has put people through. It is often about the only time during the year that most people will hear the Queen speaking.

Other then when my son stops by, my Christmas tradition typically involves trying to avoid people by using the 24 hours of "A Christmas Story" on TBS as an excuse...

I celebrate my birthday. I will be 48 on the 25th of December. I am not Christian but I do take full advantage of Christmas mince pies and we are on our 3rd Christmas cake. Actually I think we just finished our third one, I better get off to he shops.

A lot of the South African Christmas traditions seem to be based on British traditions, surprise surprise, except typically the day would be spent at the beach or around the pool.

One other recent "import" tradition in the UK is Panettone, which comes from Italy. This wonderful light fluffy bread/cake is filled with things like dried fruit and candied peels, and often with a range of flavours. It also makes an excellent base for bread-and-butter pudding.

(I'm slightly worried that almost all of my Christmas Traditions seem to involve food.....)

We used to put coins in the Christmas pudding, and if you got one in your portion you got to keep it. (Parents had to make sure each kid 'found' a coin in their's or there'd be ructions.)

I don't know if anyone still does this - but it's probably illegal on health and safety grounds.
