I do have the THX iPhone app that I used to double check my TVs and they are good as far as the app goes. As for ATV, I cannot use the calibration feature because Apple was stupid enough not to use the rear camera on the iPhone instead of requiring facial recognition. |

I’m not sure why Apple chose the requirement for iPhones with a FaceID, perhaps as yet another incentive to buy a newer phone. Albeit doing a color calibration on your TV isn’t worth buying a newer iPhone for by any stretch of the imagination. The newest iPhones cost more than my new 4K 50” TV!
I use a Youtube video (see below) to help me eyeball the color and general video settings. The video lasts 20 minutes, long enough to get most or all the settings adjusted in most cases. You can always rerun it too. The video is a simple TV test pattern to help you visualize how well your settings are working. Each TV brand and/or system software type it runs is different, so it is best to search the internet for help related to the TV one owns. My Sony Bravia uses Android TV version 9. And of course each streaming device is using a different set up system. I can certainly see why a lot of people opt to pay an installer to set everything up for them. |

Unfortunately, Google continues to NOT offer HDR capability with Youtube for ATV 4K. They have had since 2017 to make it available, but still refuse. We just got Youtube 4K capability from Google for many of the Apple devices within the last year or so. Google does offer Youtube HDR capability for Android TV and Fire TV. I'm not sure about Roku. The Fire TV Cube has lesser specs than the ATV 4K, so it shouldn't have anything to do with that. I'm pretty sure this is just Google thumbing its nose at Apple.
HDR makes a huge difference on the way a 4K HDR video plays on Youtube for 4K HDR capable TVs. On the ATV 4K they look terrible. On Fire TV and Android TV they look stunning. Plus the Fire TV Cube already has up to 60fps streaming of 4K UHD, but the original ATV 4K only has 30fps. I don't notice any difference though, but I’m not a gamer. They both stream well. The new ATV 4K does offer a bump up to 4K UHD at 60fps. Not really worth buying for that unless someone is a gamer. |
