There are patches to make the font sizes for ePub and KePub the same using the ePub font sizes.

I can buy for about 199€ a 10.3" 64Gb LCD tablet (Lenovo Tab M10 FHD Plus (2nd Gen)) which will support as much as colors as I want. Why should I, for instance, ever buy just a 7.8" 32Gb e-Ink (water)color (ONYX Boox Nova 3 Color) for about 419€?

Seeing the price tags on the latest new e-readers, I fear that the next forthcoming Kobo will be in the same league, even without an e-Ink color screen.
At least Kobo costs less then Kindle.

I think this patch doesn't survive updates, does it? I'm honestly to lazy to re-apply the patch after each update.

If you use the overrides, it's then very easy to apply the patches for each new firmware.

Unfortunately, I think we're past the days of the "affordable" e-Ink reader.

You need economies of scale for electronics to get cheap. The numbers simply aren't there for e-Ink e-readers. They're a niche market, and niche markets are almost always pricey.

I find the price worth it. I can get utterly lost in a book on my Kobo (Aura H2O 1st Gen for the curious.) I can't do that with my tablets. I find my eyes tire out more with them (YMMV). Also, the temptation to go online is there. With the easy library loans from Overdrive I've probably paid for the readers I've owned multiple times over. (I'm currently on #4, three of which I've paid for.)

Should anything happen to my Aura H2O, I will likely be shelling out $225 CDN (including taxes) for a Libra.

After selling my Aura H2O2 on an ebay clone, I was able to get my Libra for price roughly equivalent to CDN$225, to me that's not outrageous, but it is the maximum I could spare. A Forma cots 60% what I paid for my phone, and offers nowhere near 60% functionality, so it's off the books (#tooeasy #sorrynotsorry)

I don't calculate functionality vs price so strictly. The joy I get from using a device is often worth more to me than pure monetary value. After all, a 3000€ laptop and a 300€ laptop don't differ in functionality all that much, but the respective user experiences well may. As to an ereader and a phone... they're different devices for different purposes. I see no point in comparing them. YMMV, of course.

My point in comparing also relates to financial constraints. A phone is used for work and so part of the cost can be claimed against my taxes, whereas an ereader is strictly a recreational purchase, and since even the price of a Libra represents a significant stretch on my budget, spending more on a device that does less and offers no tax advantages is simply out of the question.

Well, I don't use a phone for work at all, so my phone is as recreational as my ereaders and all my other electronic devices are. (I do use an office laptop for work, but not for any personal purpose or entertainment; for that I have my own laptops and tablets. One reason for that is that the use of my work laptop is strictly limited by the company - I cannot install any programs on it or even customize it as I prefer).

As to the stretch on the budget, most of my electronics are bought from local shops and paid by installments. Not the ereaders, though; they're either not sold here or are much too expensive, so I have to order them from abroad.

Unless your job includes creating ebooks, or proof reading, or reviewing etc.
Also larger eink sold as electronic paper could be work expenses.

There are likely other jobs that could justify ereaders to save paper.

I think my ereader does more than my phone. My ereaded has a larger screen, and I read on it almost exclusively.

Indeed. I should have said my phone, not a phone. I suspect that if I had the sort of job where an e-reader might be a work-related expense, the expense of buying one would not be the major issue it is for me anyway.

Pocketbook is miles away then Kobo. I have both readers at home and I will never return to Kobo. Pocketbook has:
*full language support of my country
*full support for local main e-book sellers
*no problem with accessories for older models
*great UI created for user, not to promote own e-boo shop
*physical buttons

This is completely different quality. Kobo was great 5-7 years ago, today it is terrible outdated company.

How is the eBook management? Kobo can be managed from Calibre and has a lot of features.

Same with Pocketbook. Collection management with Calibre works well, Series management can be buggy though.
