I just wanted to be able to add my books and know which one's to read next. On my last reader (Glo) I just couldn't get it to do it. I even renamed them before drop and dragging them to the device. Put them in Collections, but still didn't keep them in order of time added either.

Right now everything is on an SD card (Glo took cards).
Unfortunately, you have to do some work. Series metadata in ebooks isn't that common (at least I don't see it). If you want it on the Kobo devices, you have to add it somewhere. You choices are basically:
  • Use calibre. Add books and maintain the metadata there.
  • Maintain the metadata in the books in some other way. There is at least one epub metadata editor out there, but, I have never used it. Sigil is a possibility as it is an epub editor and has a metadata editor built in.

Once you have the metadata, you have other choices.
  • Use calibre. Send the book and the next time you connect the series info will be set.
  • NickelSeries. A good choice if you don't want to use calibre.
  • seriesmeta tool - For books already on the device that have series info.
  • Directly updating the database manually. I don't seriously expect anyone to do this, but, it can be done.

Based on what you have said, use calibre for everything. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it.

From what @jgbout has said, his computer is a Chromebook. I've played with calibre under Linux on a newer Chromebook and other than having to install a couple of dependencies, the install was fairly smooth. OTOH, connecting an ereader was not a happy experience since the USB support is not quite ready for prime time.

Yeah, I heard Calibre & USB on Chromebook was a bit wonky right now.
Maybe I'll just look online when I want to know which in a series of books to read, no hassle.
