I think the computer system is best. 2020-09-24 would be the way to write dates.

The USA can keep Fahrenheit, pounds weight and using them in ways no-one else does, imperial measures generally, whatever spellings and meanings they want for words. Everything. Except the stupid mm-dd-yy format or mm-dd-yyyy. It doesn't sort and you don't know what it means.
ISO is good: yyyy-mm-dd as NO-ONE anywhere has any other order for dates that start with years. It's Most to Least like every other measurement, and so is hours and minutes.
Since around 2000 people outside the USA have gone from dd-mm-yy or mm/yy to four digits. Except on Credit cards which are still stupidly mm/yy.
The dd-mm-yyyy also sorts, though it's not totally unambiguous because of the USA.

EDIT, PS:
putting a three letter abbreviation for month is bad. Some people don't use English.

If I was being totally pedantic I'd ask people to use HC dates, i.e. today is 12020/09/24, stops the argument of BCE vs BC and Julian vs Gregorian and no year Zero issue. UK changed YEARS later to Gregorian from Julian than most of Europe.

It's not computers, it's ISO! But I agree, it's best.
I use it in spreadsheets too.

You've no idea the havoc, or maybe you have.

The UI is so bizarre I've never managed to remember how to use it for anything else from one session to the next. (Well, that's a lie: I've also hacked its ebook conversion fairly extensively for use converting an ebook into a paper book: back then, its PDF conversion couldn't do different margins on facing pages or page numbers properly, so I had to add that. But that's different, that's Python and the command line, it's much easier to grasp than Calibre's, ah, shall we say *unique* user interface.)
I tested out the following and you will pretty much be able to see the periodicals in your Kindle arranged by date.

Preferences > Plugboard

at the top select the format and send to email.
Paste in the title field: {date} - {title}

Don't put the date on the end because if the title is too long the date won't show. Unless you shorten the title.

It will show up like this: 20 Sep 2020 - This Periodical's Title

You can sort by dates now when you title sort on your device, as well as Content and Devces.

If you want to change it around with the date formats, create a custom column that either copies the date and set it with the format you want, or reset how the dates show in the date field. If you go the cusom column route then switch out that column name for the {date} in the plugboard.

Easy!

I'll give it a try! Of course, whether ebook-convert will pay attention to this, given that from its perspective it's just saving to disk and the emailing doesn't happen until calibre-smtp is run... (and... annoyingly, it doesn't appear to be possible to say "do this but only for periodicals translated from recipes", which means everything else I email out will be similarly modified. It might be easier for me just to hack the recipe...)

Amazon "sending" can't read the author metadata

I posted the following in a new thread earlier today. I hadn't seen this thread at the time. You can read it all if you like. It's long.
But in short, emailing a can longer grab the author from the metadata, so your email address will be the author. So emailing is a waste of time if you want the author name to show up.
The Send to Kindle app also cannot grab the author from the metadata either, so it will just use the name on your Amazon account as the author. The workaround for this is to manually type or paste the author name into the separate "author' line in the Send to Kindle app.
All of this has nothing to do with calibre. I've tried this with calibre converted books and mobi files form other sources. All the same. There's just something wrong with the conversion software on Amazon's servers.
I've also submitted a detailed ticket on this via Amazon chat. I'm not holding my breath.

Here's my other post:
This is a very recent issue. Whether using the "Send to Kindle" app or sending by email, the software doesn't retrieve the author name from the metadata as displayed in the filename and so the "author" shown in Kindle will only be your own name or your email address, not the book's real author! You can, of course, manually type in an author name in the "Send to Kindle" app (on computer or mobile device) for just a single book (but not for multiple/batch uploads). So you can effectively only upload one book/doc at a time. But you can't add an author name at all if sending a file to your Kindle via email. So if you want an author name, you cannot presently use email!

I don't know how clear the following is, but I sent
the detailed message below to Amazon via "chat". The chat person said she would file a report to tech on my behalf. Where that ends up, who knows? Perhaps others have noticed this issue?

Message to Amazon:
"Whether using the Send to Kindle app or email, the service does not seem to be reading the author info from the metadata. If you select a book and right click to use Send to Kindle on PC, in the Title line the author shows after the title, separated by a hyphen: "Book ABC - John Doe". You can leave the actual author line blank. The sending service reads the author from the title line. That's the way it's worked for years. BUT in the last few weeks, unless you put the author name in the actual "author" line of the app, the service uses MY OWN name as author, and my name is listed in the author column in the cloud and on all devices. (and though the author name is included after the hyphen in the title line, only the title is transferred to the devices and the cloud - it doesn't show in the title itself, it's just ignored) However. if you put the author in the author line, then it works correctly, and the author name shows up where it belongs on your devices.

"Of course, this means you can NEVER send multiple books anymore via "Send to Kindle" app because it won't pick up all the individual author names from the metadata. You'd need to send things one at a time and add the author name manually. The same is happening with sending personal docs or books via email. The author comes out on the device as the email address you used to send the files. Which means if you want the author to be correct on the Kindles and in the cloud storage, you can't use email at all because there's no way to add an author name other than via the metadata in the file itself, which the Kindle document service is not currently able to read.

"The docs/books I'm sending are all in .mobi format. Some were converted from .epub in Calibre. Some were already in DRM-free mobi format from other sources. So I doubt there is anything wrong with the metadata itself, given the various sources of the files."

I've noticed this recently, though when I actually download the book the actual author's name loads.

yeah, if you send anything it will have that, but perhaps if you use Calibre Portable, and create a library just for those books you want emailed in that format, you can do that and not have your other books be effected?

Works as long as you change author's name manually before uploading. Just type in actual author's name in the "Author" field in Send to Kindle app.

I sent two books to my Oasis the other day. Both had my email as author when I viewed them in the All tab. Once downloaded, one book showed the correct author, and one showed my email address as author. I thought that was strange.

I really don't care though.

Yeah, much more annoying is the ongoing problem where things that are meant to be delivered to the device (periodicals, updated books etc) simply aren't: for periodicals you can download them by hand, but for updated books you appear to have to delete and redownload them one by one, which is really irritating.

Can't Amazon keep anything working?

Hmmm...I have heard of other people have had problems like this, but I never have. The books always are delivered to the device specified. For periodicals, it's the device that was specified when the subscription started. For updated books, I just tested it by going to my content and devices page on Amazon and clicking on the "Update Available" link to update two different books. Both were updated on the device automatically when I synced it. I'm not sure why it's not working for you...have you contacted Kindle support to see if they can help?

On the app, there right before you hit "send" there is room at the top to edit the title/author. Don't bother with the title, because it reads the metadata for that, but you can rename the author, because if you look at the space it already is filled in with either the last author you typed in or if not, then your name (or whomever the app is registered to)

Don't forget to list it as LN, FN if you want it to match author sort on the kindle.

Edit: J.C. I just realized I responded to a quesiton from the first page, and not the last.

It used to work for me too: it suddenly stopped around the time of the upgrade to firmware 5.13 (not sure if it was the exact same time though). Probably a good idea to contact Kindle support: I'll give them a buzz.
