At one point, LG was making eInk screen and they had a flaw where they would fade in sunlight. Amazon, Sony, and others had they problem screen.

I was curious to test your assertion, as I think you are way overstating it. But I couldn't find the spare SD card.

I suspect the old Simple Touch would work just fine. I know it wasn't a powerhouse, but I don't read image heavy stuff on my readers anyway.

I know on the Sony PRS-T1 and the nook STR, when you had a high enough resolution image such as a cover, they would both slow down. They would work, but it was slow to render the image. I've not tried multiple hi-res images for the same HTML file such as multiple maps.

IMO, my my older devices look "washed out" compared to my newer Glo HD. I just looked at my Kobo Touch and Sony 505. Compared to my Glo HD the background is greyer and the text isn't as black. To me, this looks washed out, now that I am used to the Glo HD. Even holding the Touch directly under a light (something I'm not going to do during normal reading), it still looks washed out, compared to my Glo HD.

If you prefer, I'll change "washed out" to poor contrast.

But when 800x600 Pearly screen were the norm, did they look washed out (poor contrast)? I didn't think so back then.

I think "washed out" and poor contrast are pretty much synonymous, but do not think pixel density and contrast are necessarily related. It could be difficult to maintain fill factor as pixel density increases. That would reduce contrast.

E-ink contrast and pixel density have both been improving over time, so maybe it is more like older technology screens are often washed out. As a pure example, the quite old 9.7" 150dpi Kindle DXG is not washed out and has better contrast than the even older Kindle DX.

I just side-loaded the same book to both her K3 and my ClaraHD, and to be honest, the cover graphics looked better on her K3, with better shading.

Yes, that is hi-res enough. How long did it take to display the cover on the K3.

I didn't time it, but I don't remember it being particularly slow. The performance of her K3 is still perfectly acceptable for me.

Can you load the cover on both the K3 and the Clara HD at the same time and see how they get on? Thanks.

No I understood what you meant. You drew an incorrect conclusion based on your very limited personal experience. I've owned way too many ereaders (like many here) and feel very confident in saying that older ereaders are not washed out in general. I can even take out my own Kobo Touch or K3 or K4 and snap a pic if you want showing one of those old geezers completely outperform most of my modern Kindles and Kobos with much blacker font. If modern ereaders didn't have frontlights there would really be no competition on the contrast front.

You got me. My apologies. I meant the older 800x600 (and some higher resolution/pearl) devices that I have used.

And FWIW, I just compared my Sony 505 to my Glo HD (with the front light off), and the 505 looks washed out in comparison.

I compared my Touch to my Glo HD (with the light off), and my Touch looks washed out in comparison.

I compared my Old Nook (no front light model) to my Glo HD (front light off), and my Nook looks washed out in comparison.

I haven't compared my Touch to a modern device (I guess my Glo HD isn't modern enough), but I'll have access to a Forma in a couple of days (this is the most modern device which I "own"), and I'll report back.

This is my 10 year old Kindle 3 (keyboard) compared to my one year old Oasis 3.
