Mickey Mouse is locked up until 2023.
FREE Mickey Mouse!

BTW: I like Slite's avatar. That puppy looks like a little Cujo and the big dog looks wore out.

Thanks. But Cujo was a St. Bernard if I remember correctly? And these are not, even tho they are from the same country of origin As in, I wish I had a Euro for everytime someone came up and asked if they are St. Bernard's or even more often, trying to be funny and ask where the cognac-barrel is

As far as I'm concerned, Disney are welcome to a perpetual copyright on M. Mouse if, as a result, it stops their political lobbying in the US for continual extension of copyright terms for everything. Let them have their damned mouse if we get books as a result!

Mickey as a 'symbol of (United States of) America'... ...Please no. Mouse or rat, I loath that horrid animated rodent and the organization that perpetuates its existence with almost every fiber of my being.

It is not a symbol for me- Its a symbol of mediocrity. With that said, perhaps with the way things have been going it might just work for the nation after all. Might as well except and embrace what we've become and celebrate what has made us so.

Disney is dead, long live Mickey Mouse.

XXXXX

I share sentiment with the idea of giving Disney perpetual rights to the mouse if it means they will stop meddling with copyright law. Unfortunately once one gets special treatment, all of big media will want it. Alas.

So, let them have it. Personal copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author (plus some); I'd have no personal objection to corporate copyrights lasting as long as the company is in existance.

Wouldn't that lead to corporations acquiring all the content they can, then sitting on it forever? It sounds like a terrible idea.

I do have an objection to that; the whole point of copyright is to encourage the production of more material for the public domain. Corporations, unlike individuals, have no natural lifespan. In addition how do you define the "existence" of the company? Most companies don't ever go completely away, the remains are often purchased by other companies.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way though. If you give it to one corporation everyone will want it. I personally think that the original copyright gave Disney ample opportunity to make a profit off the effort they put into the character development and they should continue to develop new characters if they want to continue making a profit.

I don't understand how a corporation can own a symbol of America and I'm not so sure that most American's would want Mickey Mouse to be their symbol.

Disney doesn't even need to develop new characters; after all loosing a copyright does not mean you are not entitled to use the characters and stories involved, just that everyone else is allowed to as well. So Disney can still create material using Mickey Mouse... but then again, so can everyone else.

... and we haven't exactly been deluged with M. Mouse products from countries where it is out of copyright protection, have we?
