I used to log in with the same email address at both sites (as well as the German and French sites). Then a few years ago I decided to change my email address at the US site. Their system would not allow me to change to the same (new) email at the UK site as I kept getting an error message the email was already in use (at the US site). So Amazon told me to use a different email for the UK site (which also works at the German and French sites). My name and address are the same, just different emails. Since they are the ones who told me to do so, I don't think they care. |

Anything without the £20 "free shipping" to Ireland (usually you don't know if the free shipping applies till checkout!) MAY be cheaper from Germany, the amazon de has an English option and has Euro pricing, which Ireland uses. When searching on USA, UK, German market places (there isn't one for Ireland) you'll get offered items which don't actually ship to Ireland. I have a separate USA real kindle, real address and and feed it gift vouchers to do test purchases. Probably for historic market monopoly reasons you may be only able to use a kindle generally with the Marketplace for your registered kindle address. UK & USA have had a fraught history since 19th C because of USA publishers ignoring UK copyright. Many "big" publishers have "divvied" up the world for English language titles. I think I had to create a separate account for amazon japan, fortunately the screen layout matches! So it's only partly Amazon stupidity, partly the Publishers. Historically Ireland even after 1922 has been treated as a UK region by International companies, not just Publishers, so often exclusive UK distribution rights for Film, TV, books, clothes, machinery etc include Ireland. A Spanish supplier of test gear would only supply via UK wholesale. Currency hedging x 2. Perhaps with Brexit part of the UK parasitism (since 17th C actually!) on Wholesale distribution to Ireland from 3rd countries will end over the next year. Still no sign of Amazon PROPERLY selling in Euro to Ireland. Crazy Amazon Sterling and mad euro equivalent only last stage checkout. Though they have added English to german site and option to switch Kindle to USA. |

Curiously DVDs, BDs and paper books seem to be less of a problem than ebooks. The Kindle does seem to only be able to be used at one Marketplace at a time. Though I've had problems with laser printers and toner (could only buy the model I wanted from the German Market place, not UK, but can only buy Toner for it in Sterling from UK Marketplace!) |

I can't use Amazon UK to buy ebooks either, only Amazon.com. It's actually funny, because I can buy the exact same UK ebooks, only not on the UK site. I have to buy them on the US site. That's pretty absurd.

There are all sorts of problems with that. Including not being able to buy eBooks with the second account because it expects you to buy them with the original. I had both US and Canadian accounts with the same email and had to create a new Canadian one with a different email. Oh, and my UK one has a third email. And each of my secondary accounts has an OLD eInk Kindle attached to it for DRM removal.

Edited to add: These accounts are all US accounts and I had access to them in order to make those changes. Another disadvantage of combining these and deleting the old account is that if you chose to delete a book and change your mind, you can't get it added back to your library as the old account is closed. You have to have an order number to have the ebook reinstated to account. So, say you were clearing out free books and later discovered you really liked the author - you will have to buy it if it isn't in your Calibre library. So, let me make sure I understand this correctly:
If you buy eBooks from Amazon that are encrypted for your specific Kindle, and you download those eBooks to your computer (in encrypted form), then you CANNOT sideload these onto your Kindle (still in encrypted form) and expect your Kindle to decrypt them so they can be read? I don't understand why, after the eBooks have been encrypted for your Kindle, that you need any contact with Amazon, let alone an active account, to read your Ebooks (on the Kindle that they were originally encrypted for). If your Kindle breaks and you buy a new one, yeah, I can understand how you would be screwed in that situation. I never thought you needed to have an active Amazon account AFTER you had downloaded your eBook purchases. But you WOULD be limited to only be able to use them on the Kindle that they were originally encrypted for. If this need for an Amazon account it true, then WOW Amazon, your DRM sucks! I'm glad I always remove DRM from every eBook purchase immediately. But I never realized that this was strictly necessary if I were willing to limit myself to only the Kindle that the content was originally encrypted for. |

My understanding is that the original poster was using a Kindle app on a PC. The rules are different there. |

OK I thought I should update here, and thank everyone for the help, I took your advice and called on the phone, I finally got through to someone very helpful in Amazon, this was after weeks of chat line discussion telling me it was impossible to restore my Kindle data, anyways they did restore it in the end, and now I have all my books back. It's great, I thought I would never get them back, so thanks all, for your help, I would have given up.
Cheers |
