Hi Vonda -- One difference is that my old PDA (Pocket PC with Win CE) can read .prc files, but not .mobi files. Sometimes it can read a mobi renamed to prc, but other times not. I dunno why.

Good luck. I'll be interested in hearing how that works out for you, having the books exclusively available on the Cafe site.

Thanks for the info on .prc and MOBI.

Jeff, I'll be interested, too! But, all the fiction on BVC isn't entirely exclusive -- folks are experimenting with other venues such as the Kindle store and TextOnPhone.

Interesting times,

Vonda

Hi folks. I'm working on ebook conversions for the ebook titles at Book View Cafe and I come to you once again for advice.

In converting to the .prc format using Mobipocket Creator, when I open the ebook, it doesn't open at the cover. I'd like it to open at the cover. Seems kind of pointless to add a nice cover if it's obscured by the way the book is displayed.

I played around with the Guide option but realized it doesn't tell the book where to open; it just gives you more options on where to go.

Is there a way to tell the ebook reader "begin the book at the beginning -- at the cover"?

Thanks in advance,

Vonda

(And, please stop by BVC on 31 October, when Rocket Boy and the Geek Girls will debut, and a lot of our other titles will have various other formats.)

It is likely that the MBP file is causing what you see. Generally the cover is shown the first time the eBook is opened and the .mbp file is created at the same time. After that the cover is bypassed. I suspect the act of creation caused the .mbp to be built. Erase it and try again.

Are you adding the cover using only a guide item? This is what MobiPocket now recommends, but I think it is generally better to also explicitly include the cover (same image, or some ebooks use a smaller image) as the very first thing in the ebook's HTML. See Issue with Cover and TOC? for a fuller discussion of this, and also of the "Start Reading" Guide Item (although I don't think this should be necessary if you want to start at the beginning).

I'm sticking my head in here to announce that Book View Cafe is nearing the launch of its first all-original shared world anthology: THE SHADOW CONSPIRACY. Steampunk! I'm doing the formatting, and I keep getting distracted by the stories--I want to stop and read.

And ROCKET BOY AND THE GEEK GIRLS, our anthology of reprinted and original SF stories, is up and running in multiple formats. There's a free sample at http://www.bookviewcafe.com/index.ph...e/Alien-Voices
