K5 Can a Kindle Touch battery die without triggering the "Critical Battery" error?

I went to a number of other electronics repair shops. They almost all suggested what you did, namely removing the newer controller and soldering the old controller in its place. However, when I asked them about the health of the new battery, they gave me mixed answers. One told me that the battery was fine, the other told me that it won't hold a charge, while another shop told me that it did hold a charge, but it had an abnormal (dis)charge profile (instead of a smooth descent, amperage values would fluctuate).

I had the new battery soldered to the old battery's controller. It then gave me a "Critical Battery" error. At home, I charged it up, and it booted to diags, where I copied over a known-good version of mmcblk0p1, regenerated device_info.xml, and rebooted into main. In main, it froze, and each reboot would take it a step further, until it successfully booted. I did a factory reset, since it showed books that no longer existed, and a fresh start would be a good idea. When I did that, it did a factory reset, and presented me with the language selection screen.

However, it froze once again after selecting "English". No amount of resets would make it leave the Kindle tree, and USB Download Mode is back to its old habit of not working.

Do you know of any reliable method by which I can reliably test the battery?
And is it really dud, or is it because I keep using the device without giving it sufficient time to charge, especially that it is 1500 mAh instead of 1420?
