I read at a level higher then my age when I was in grade school. I liked to read at an early age and it showed. I didn't have to to college to learn to read past an 8th grade level.

I think whoever said that about college and reading is full of garbage,

John, on the average, someone who has some college education reads at a higher level. The key word there is being average.

I've known quite a few people whose formal education ended with their high school days who read voraciously at a high level and others who have their baccalaureate or higher and seldom read anything for pleasure and that reading material is pretty low level. Their work related reading is—likely—at a higher level.

One horrible example is a couple who are accountants. If not for their children, they would not have more than 2 or 3 books in their home. I have difficulty believing that Franklin, the Berenstain Bears and similar books are evidence of a high reading level.
